Harbhajan Singh comes out in support of Rohit Sharma, says, 'People are going overboard in criticism'

Harbhajan Singh played under Rohit Sharma's leadership for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has come under fire after India’s World Test Championship Final defeat against Australia at The Oval. India suffered a huge defeat of 209 runs in the final, this was India’s second consecutive WTC Final loss in the last two years. Amidst the talks of change in leadership, BCCI decided to give Rohit a longer run and have continued with him for the next World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle.

Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has also come out in support of the Indian captain Rohit Sharma. Harbhajan Singh feels that people are going overboard with Rohit Sharma’s criticism. Earlier former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar said that there was an issue with Rohit’s leadership.

Harbhajan supports Rohit Sharma

Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh said, “I find that people are going a bit overboard… the way Rohit has been criticised. Cricket is a team sport and one individual can not take you from one place to another”. Talking to a news agency PTI, Harbhajan further added, “Team India didn’t do well in the WTC final and yes, you talk about that performance and move on from there. But it is unfair to criticise Rohit alone, that he is not scoring runs, putting on weight, not captaining well, I think he is a brilliant leader”. Harbhajan Singh has played under Rohit Sharma’s leadership in the Indian Premier League for Mumbai Indians.

Supporting Rohit, Harbhajan said this is the time to show faith in Rohit's leadership. He added, “I have played with him and watched him closely. He commands a lot of respect not only in the MI dressing room but also in the Indian dressing room. So I think it’s unfair to judge him based on recent results. He will come good and we need to show faith in him and we need to support him rather than pinpointing”.

Under Rohit, Team India lost semi-final in the T20 World Cup 2022 and also the WTC Final. India will be playing Cricket World Cup in October-November under his leadership.
