Explained: Why Harry Brook will get banned from the IPL for two years

Harry Brook has pulled out of IPL 2025.
On Monday, March 10, England batsman Harry Brook announced his decision to withdraw from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Brook was bought by Delhi Capitals (DC) at the IPL 2025 mega auction in November 2024 for INR 6.25 crores. He had also pulled out of IPL 2024 following the passing of his grandmother.
Brook announced his decision on Instagram, stating that he needs to focus on England’s upcoming series against the West Indies and India.
He wrote, “It is a really important time for England cricket and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series. In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date.“
“I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right, and playing for my country remains my priority and focus.“
After pulling out from the IPL, the England youngster now risks of getting banned from the tournament for two seasons.
Explained: Why Harry Brook will get banned from the IPL for two years
The England youngster will now face a two-season ban from the IPL, according to Clause 6 of the IPL Player Regulation 2025-27, which states that any player who makes himself unavailable before the start of the season after being picked in the auction will be banned for two seasons.
The clause says, “Any player who registers in the player auction and after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season, will get banned from participating in the tournament and player auction for two seasons.“
The IPL governing council introduced this rule as the franchises were fed up of overseas stars pulling out of the tournaments after being invested in at the auctions.
The Capitals now face the challenge of finding a replacement for Brook. The 26-year-old had a tough couple of months in ODI cricket as he struggled during the three-match series against India and then the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
He is also one of the leading candidates, alongside Phil Salt and Liam Livingstone, to succeed Jos Buttler as England’s ODI captain.
