Harshit Rana has been an integral member of Kolkata Knight Riders since the last few seasons.
The world’s most exciting cricketing competition, Indian Premier League (IPL) is less than two weeks away. During the build-up, the narrative was largely around Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who entered the IPL 2026 auction with a massive prize pool. They released Andre Russell, a legend of IP, who later retired and joined their coaching staff.
They also let go of their 20 Cr+ pick in Venkatesh Iyer, and made some expensive buys. Cameron Green joined KKR for a massive 25.20 Cr, while Matheesha Pathirana too earned 18 Cr.
KKR looked to solve their batting issues with the inclusion of Kiwi stars in Tim Seifert and Finn Allen. However, massive controversy surrounded them when they bought and later released Mustafizur Rahman, which eventually led to Bangladesh’s boycott of the T20 World Cup 2026.
Harshit Rana ruled out of IPL due to injury

Now, KKR have been hit by another huge blow. Harshit Rana, who became an integral part of the Indian team, was ruled out of the T20 World Cup earlier, due to a knee injury, which he suffered in a warm-up match against South Africa. He underwent successful knee surgery in early February 2026, forcing him to miss the entire tournament.
While he was earlier expected to return for the IPL, as per the reports in Times of India, it is learned that the KKR bowling all-rounder will miss the competition. This leaves a huge gap in KKR’s setup as Rana was one of their first-choice names in the playing XI.
There is already a shortage in their pace department, with Pathirana too being sidelined from the T20 World Cup. In Rana’s absence, the Indian bowlers in the squad will have to punch above their weights. Vaibhav Arora, who played majority of the matches for KKR last year, will share a huge responsibility.
Umran Malik too returns to the league and under bowling coach Tim Southee, Malik will hope to finally deliver the promise he had once given the nation. A few seasons earlier, the J&K pacer had impressed everyone with his pace, but inconsistency in lines and injury woes kept him away from action.
Akash Deep and Kartik Tyagi, who were previously unlikely to make the playing XI, might now be included following Rana’s injury. KKR alternatively continues to scout for a bowling talent who can do what Rana brought to the table, which is bowling in the middle-overs and death.
