List of hat-tricks taken by Pakistan bowlers in test cricket

One Pakistan bowler has taken two hat-tricks in test cricket.

The Pakistan cricket team made their test debut in 1952, five years after the partition from India. So far, they have played over 400 test matches and won over 150 of them.

Pakistan are well-known for producing world-class fast bowlers. While a few of them have dominated world cricket for a long period of time, many faded away as quickly as they came, especially over the past two decade-and-half.

So far, there have been only six instances of Pakistani bowlers taking a hat-trick in test cricket, with one bowler doing it on two occasions. Let us see all those instances.

List of hat-tricks taken by Pakistan bowlers in test cricket:

1. Wasim Akram vs Sri Lanka, Lahore, 1999

Legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram was the first Pakistani bowler to take a hat-trick in test cricket. He achieved this feat against Sri Lanka during the Asian Test Championship match in Lahore.

During Sri Lanka’s first innings, Akram nipped out Romesh Kaluwitharana, Niroshan Bandaratilleke, and Pramodya Wickramasinghe on three consecutive deliveries to register this historic feat. Akram cleaned up Sri Lanka’s tail quickly as Pakistan gained a lead of 70 runs.

The match ended in a draw.

2. Wasim Akram vs Sri Lanka, Dhaka, 1999

Just a week after claiming his first test hat-trick, Wasim Akram took his second test hat-trick, once again against Sri Lanka. This time, it came in the all-important final of the Asian Test Championship that took place in Dhaka.

Sri Lanka had conceded a first innings deficit of 363 runs. In their second innings they were bowled out for 188 after suffering a poor start, which saw Akram dismiss three batsmen in three consecutive balls spread across his first two overs.

On the last two balls of his first over, Akram removed Avishka Gunawardene and Chaminda Vaas, and on the first ball of his second over, he dismissed Mahela Jayawardene to seal his second hat-trick in test cricket.

Pakistan won the Asian Test Championship final by an innings and 175 runs.

3. Abdul Razzaq vs Sri Lanka, Galle, 2000

Fast-bowling all-rounder Abdul Razzaq was the second Pakistani bowler to register a test hat-trick. He did it against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2000.

Razzaq dismissed three lower-order batsmen – Romesh Kaluwitharana, Rangana Herath, and Ravindra Pushpakumara – in a row during Sri Lanka’s first innings. The hosts were bowled out for 181.

Eventually, Pakistan won by an innings and 163 runs.

4. Mohammad Sami vs Sri Lanka, Lahore, 2002

In the final of the Asian Test Championship 2002, former Pakistani speedster Mohammad Sami took a hat-trick, though it came in a losing cause.

In reply to Pakistan’s first innings total of 234, Sri Lanka scored 528 runs, courtesy of Kumar Sangakkara’s double century. Sami cleaned up the last three wickets – Charitha Buddhika, Nuwan Zoysa, Muthiah Muralidaran – in a row to complete a hat-trick.

The hat-trick came too late, though, as Sri Lanka had amassed a huge lead, eventually winning by eight wickets.

5. Naseem Shah vs Bangladesh, Rawalpindi, 2020

In the first test of the Bangladesh tour of Pakistan in 2020, fast bowler Naseem Shah took a hat-trick during the visitors’ second innings in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan took a first innings lead of 212 runs and then bowled out Bangladesh for 168 to win by an innings. Naseem Najmul Hossain Shanto, Taijul Islam and Mahmudullah as part of his hat-trick.

6. Noman Ali vs West Indies, Multan, 2025

Noman Ali became the first Pakistani spinner to take a hat-trick in test cricket in January 2025. He achieved this feat against West Indies in Multan in 2025 in the second test of the series.

During West Indies’ first innings, Ali bagged a six-wicket haul, which bundled out the visitors for 163 runs. His hat-trick victims were Justin Greaves, Tevin Imlach, and Kevin Sinclair.
