Heath Streak death rumours: Series of events that took place
Henry Olonga took U-turn as Heath Streak confirmed he is “alive” to end all rumours.
August 23 started with one of the saddest news stories, which claimed that former Zimbabwean star Heath Streak took his last breath at a young age of 49. Streak, who was an icon for Zimbabwe cricket, was reported to have lost his life after a long battle with cancer. Reports further claimed that the cancer affected his liver and colon, which became the reason for his death. Even some of the cricketers shared this news on social media.
Former Zimbabwean pacer and Streak’s teammate Henry Olonga was one of them. Then, current star Sean Williams also took to Twitter and shared his prayers for Streak’s family. It took the world by storm; everyone was talking about it, and fans were sharing this news on the various social media platforms. Every sports news channel also confirmed the news. However, it seems like it was just a misunderstanding.
Heath Streak confirms that he is alive and fit to end his death rumours.
Hours after the report about Streak’s death shattered the whole cricket fraternity, Heath Streak himself confirmed that he is well and alive. He even texted Olonga to share this news to end the rumours and remove his earlier post. The former pacer took to Twitter and wrote,
“I can confirm that rumours of the demise of Heath Streak have been greatly exaggerated. I just heard from him. The third umpire has called him back. He is very much alive, folks.” In an interview with Mid-day, Streak himself said, “It is a total rumour and a lie. I’m alive and well. I am very upset to learn that something as big as someone apparently passing can be spread unverified, especially in our day and age of social media.”
In fact, it was Olonga who shared the news of Streak’s demise earlier in a tweet. In his post, he wrote, “Sad news has emerged of Heath Streak’s passing. Rest in peace, legendary figure of @ZimCricketTV. He stood as the finest all-rounder our nation produced. Playing alongside you was an honor. Farewell until we meet again on the other side, when my time to bowl concludes…😔.”
He also posted an old picture from the 1999 ODI World Cup of him and Streak. Following his post, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag and veteran off-spinner Ravi Ashwin also shared their condolences. However, all of these have now been removed. Notably, Streak’s family confirmed earlier that he was battling cancer and going through treatment.
