Jacques Rudolph was the first South African batter to score a century in Bangladesh in test cricket.

South Africa have a tremendous record over Bangladesh in test cricket. They have not lost a single test against Bangladesh so far. All those successes have included some exceptional individual performances of their batsmen.

Scoring big runs in Bangladesh for non-Asian batsmen is tough because of the spin-friendly surfaces. That is why only a few South African batters have managed to reach a three-figure mark in Bangladesh in tests.

In this article, we will talk about the top five individual scores by a South African batter in test cricket in Bangladesh.

Top five highest individual scores by South African batsmen in Bangladesh in test cricket:

5. Kyle Verreynne -114, Dhaka, 2024

Only three designated South African wicket-keepers have a century in test cricket in Asia. After AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock, it was Kyle Verreynne who became the third keeper to join this elite list and he is the only one to do it in Bangladesh.

Verreynne slammed a century in Dhaka in October 2024 to join this elite list. He also became only the fifth South African batter to hit a test century in Bangladesh. On a tough pitch, the right-hander made 114 off 143, with eight fours and two sixes.

4. Boeta Dippenaar – 177*, Chattogram, 2003

Boeta Dippenaar was the second Protea batsman to score a test century in Bangladesh. It came in a record-breaking partnership between him and Jacques Rudolph for the third wicket during the 2003 test in Chattogram.

They added 429* runs together, the highest partnership for South Africa in test cricket for any wicket. Dippenaar made 177 not out and Jacques scored a double-century. South Africa won the game by an innings and 60 runs.

3. Jacques Rudolph – 222*, Chattogram, 2003

South Africa’s highest partnership in test cricket of 429* runs came against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2003. In that game, Jacques Rudolph became the first South African batter to score a test century in Bangladesh and he converted it into a double century.

He scored an unbeaten 222 off 383 balls, with 29 fours and two sixes. South Africa declared their innings at 470/2 on either side of Bangladesh’s scores of 173 and 237 to win by an innings and 60 runs.

2. Neil McKenzie – 226, Chattogram, 2008

The record for the highest opening stand in test cricket belongs to South Africa. Neil McKenzie and Graeme Smith added 415 for the first wicket against Bangladesh in Chattogram in February 2008. It was when both South African openers slammed a double century.

McKenzie scored a brilliant 226 off 388 balls, with 28 fours and three sixes. South Africa won the test by an innings and 205 runs.

1. Graeme Smith – 232, Chattogram, 2008

Former captain Graeme Smith has the highest score by a South African batsman in Bangladesh in test cricket. The left-hander scored 232 runs in Chattogram in 2008.

He formed a 415-run opening stand with Neil McKenzie to lead his side to a giant total of 583/7d. Smith made 232 off 277 balls, with 33 fours and one six.

South Africa won by an innings and 205 runs, and Smith was named the Player of the Match.
