Top 10 highest individual scores in test cricket

A total of 33 triple centuries have been hit so far in test cricket history.
Test cricket is the format of big numbers. From some of the humongous team totals to some of the biggest individual centuries, there have been some inhuman batting performances in the longest format of the game.
There are a total of 33 instances when a batter has crossed the 300-run mark in an innings in the longest format of the game. But only seven of them could cross 350-run mark and only one of them managed to score a quadruple century.
On that note, let’s take a look at the highest individual scores in test cricket.
Here are the top 10 highest individual scores in test cricket:
10. Wally Hammond – 336* vs New Zealand, Auckland, 1933
England‘s Wally Hammond was only the third batter after Andy Sandham and Sir Don Bradman to score a triple century in test cricket. He scored this in a drawn match against New Zealand in 1933 at Auckland. It was a counter-attacking knock, where he scored 336 runs, with 34 fours and 10 sixes, batting for 318 minutes, registering his name in the record books.
9. Hanif Mohammad – 337 vs West Indies, Bridgetown, 1958
Pakistan‘s great Hanif Mohammad was the first player to reach a triple century for his country. He was the sixth player overall to do so. His knock was one of the best as it came after his team was enforced follow-on. In reply to the West Indies’ 579/9, Pakistan only scored 106 runs, conceding a lead of 476 runs. That is when Hanif batted for 970 minutes and scored 337 runs. Pakistan scored 657/8 and saved the test match.
8. Sanath Jayasuriya – 340 vs India, Colombo, 1997
The highest team total in test cricket history was made by Sri Lanka when they scored 952/6 against India in Colombo in 1997 and declared the innings. It was a high-scoring draw, and Sanath Jayasuriya went on to do something exceptional. He went on to score 340 runs off 578 balls, with 36 fours and two sixes, and became the first Sri Lankan to score a triple century. He also got great support from Roshan Mahanama, who scored 225.
7. Leonard Hutton – 364 vs Australia, Oval, 1938
The highest individual score in the Ashes is registered under the name of England’s Leonard Hutton. He scored a triple hundred in the first innings of The Oval test in 2938 and scored 364 runs off 847 balls, with 35 fours. England posted the then highest total of 903/7 and declared. They then bowled out Australia for 201 and 123 runs, winning the game by an innings and 579 runs, which is the highest win margin (by innings) in test cricket.
6. Gary Sobers – 365* vs Pakistan, Kingston, 1958
Gary Sobers was one of the best batting talents produced by the West Indies, who dominated world cricket. His highest test score came against Pakistan in Kingston. Sobers scored an unbeaten 365 runs, with 38 fours, and added 446 runs with Conrad Hunte (260) for the second wicket. West Indies declared at 790/3 and bowled Pakistan out for 328 and 288, winning the game by an innings and 174 runs.
5. Wiaan Mulder – 367* vs Zimbabwe, Bulwayo, 2025

South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder went on to script history in his very first game as a test captain. In South Africa’s tour of Zimbabwe in 2025, he captained the side and went on to break many batting records. He scored a 297-ball triple hundred (second-fastest) and scored 367 not out. Mulder went past Hashim Amla (311) to score the highest individual score in tests for his country.
He is also the first and only batter to hit a triple century on test captaincy debut.
4. Mahela Jayawardene (374) vs South Africa, Colombo, 2006
The highest individual score for Sri Lanka in test cricket is held by former captain Mahela Jayawardene. He and Kumar Sangakkara (287) added the highest test partnership of all time. The pair added 624 runs for the third wicket, where Jayawardene scored 374 runs off 572 balls, including 43 fours and one six. Sri Lanka declared at 756/5 and bowled out South Africa for 169 and 434 runs, winning by an innings and 153 runs.
3. Brian Lara – 375 vs England, St. John’s 1994
Brian Lara broke many records when, in 1994, he scored a big triple century against England at St. John’s. It was the fifth and final test of the series, and Lara walked in to the crease when West Indies were at 12/2. He then went on to score 375 runs off 538 balls, with 45 fours. West Indies declared at 593/5, and England also scored the exact score of 593, and then the game ended in a draw when West Indies were at 43/0 in the second innings. This was the first attempt of Lara trying to reach the 400-run mark.
2. Matthew Hayden – 380 vs Zimbabwe, Perth, 2003
Lara’s record was broken in 2003 by Matthew Hayden in Perth against Zimbabwe. He scored the highest individual score by an Australian in the test. Hayden scored 380 off 437 balls, with 11 sixes and 38 fours in the first innings, helping Australia reach 735/6 and declare. Zimbabwe then managed only 239 and 321, losing the game by an innings and 175 runs.
1. Brian Lara – 400* vs England, St. John’s 2004

Brian Lara was the first man to hit 400 in test cricket in this planet. After Hayden broke his previous record in October 2003, Lara went on to break it in the next six months. In April 2004, he reached the 400-run mark and created history. Interestingly, it also came against England at St. John’s. He made an unbeaten 400 off 582 balls, with 43 fours and four sixes, and the game ended in a draw.
