One of India’s most iconic cricket venues is the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. It has witnessed some remarkable knocks over the years.

While Indian pitches are widely known for their slow and low nature, Wankhede stands out with its red soil composition that provides the bowlers with extra bounce and carry, which in turn also makes stroke-making comfortable.

5. Alvin Kallicharran – 187 vs India, 1978

Alvin Kallicharran’s career-best score came against India in the first test in Mumbai during the India vs West Indies series in 1978.

Replying to India’s daunting total of 424, Kallicharran inspired the visitors through his excellent 187 off 315 balls. His knock comprised 25 fours.

Kallicharran helped West Indies’ take a slender first-innings lead, going past India’ 424 with their first-innings score of 493. The match eventually ended in a draw.

4. Sunil Gavaskar – 205 vs West Indies, 1978

India’s greatest-ever test opener, Sunil Gavaskar played a memorable at his home ground in Mumbai against West Indies. Batting first on the flat track at the Wankhede, Gavaskar scored an emphatic double hundred (205) in the first innings.

Gavaskar’s resilience from one end helped India reach a fighting total of 424 in their first innings. The game ended in a boring draw with India replying to West Indies’ 493 in the first innings with 224/2 in their second innings.

3. Vinod Kambli – 224 vs England, 1993

Vinod Kambli’s dream debut series against England saw him score a blistering 224 at his home ground in Mumbai.

Kambli’s double hundred included 23 fours. Kambli’s 194-run partnership with Sachin Tendulkar for the third wicket guided India to a massive first-innings score of 591.

India won the test match by an innings and 15 runs on the last day to win the three-match series 3-0.

2. Virat Kohli – 235 vs England, 2016

2016 was Virat Kohli’s dream year across formats. Kohli scored a total of 964 runs in home tests that year, with 655 of those runs coming in the five-match series against England.

Kohli’s best innings in that series came at the Wankhede, where he toyed with the English bowlers to score 235 runs in India’s first innings. Kohli’s towering knock comprised 25 fours and one six.

India won the game comfortably by an innings and 36 runs and Kohli was named Player of the Match.

1. Clive Lloyd – 242* vs India, 1975

Clive Lloyd’s career-best score of 242* came against India in the fifth test of the West Indies tour of India in 1975.

Batting first in Mumbai, West Indies hammered India to post a mammoth total of 604. Captain Lloyd was the star of the show for the visitors, recording an unbeaten double hundred (242* off 429 balls). Llyod’s marathon innings included 19 fours and four sixes.

West Indies defeated India by 201 runs to win the five-match test series 3-2.
