India and South Africa are the two powerhouses of international cricket. In T20I cricket, their clashes have been intense and full of drama.
Both nations have been home to some of the greatest batsmen in T20I cricket. The most remarkable encounters between the two sides are the semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2014 and the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, both of which India won.
Having been part of a few high-scoring encounters, the Indian batsmen have played a key role in establishing India’s dominance over the Proteas in the shortest format of the game.

5. Shikhar Dhawan – 233 runs
Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan finished his career with 233 runs T20I runs against South Africa. Known for his flamboyant approach, Dhawan scored one half-century against the Proteas.
Dhawan’s T20I batting record against South Africa showcases his adeptness at handling the new-ball pacers. The left-hander amassed 233 runs at an average of 33 and an impressive strike rate of 141. Shikhar announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in August 2024.
4. Suresh Raina – 339 runs
Former middle-order batsman Suresh Raina scored 339 runs against South Africa in his T20I career. He scored these many runs at a solid batting average of 34 and a strike rate of 148.
Raina etched his name in India’s T20I cricket history when he scored the first-ever T20I century for India. It came against South Africa in the ICC Men’s T20 World 2010. Raina’s blistering knock of 101 came off 60 balls.
3. Suryakumar Yadav – 346 runs
India’s current T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has amassed 346 runs against South Africa. Known for his fearless approach and 360-degree range, Suryakumar’s runs against South Africa have come at an average of 57.6 and a strike rate of 175.63.
Yadav’s numbers against Proteas include one century and four half-centuries. His blistering century off 56 balls at Johannesburg in 2023 helped India register an emphatic 106-run victory.
2. Virat Kohli – 394 runs
Virat Kohli scored 394 runs against South Africa in T20I cricket. Kohli registered three half-centuries against the Proteas and had an excellent average of 39.4.
Against South Africa in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, Kohli starred for India, making 76 runs off 59 balls, guiding the “Men in Blue” to a competitive total of 176. He was named Player of the Match for his match-winning effort in the final.
1. Rohit Sharma – 429 runs
India’s highest run scorer in the T20I format, Rohit Sharma, tops the list with a total of 429 runs against the Proteas. Sharma’s excellent record against South Africa includes one century and two half-centuries.
Sharma has scored these runs at a batting average of 26.8 and a strike rate of 130. Rohit’s most remarkable knock against South Africa came in 2015 at Dharamsala where he scored a magnificent 106 off 66 balls.
