ODI cricket took a backseat in 2024 with teams prioritizing the shortest format in the first half of the year for the for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the second half being dominated by test cricket.
Several blockbuster test series including India vs New Zealand, New Zealand vs England, South Africa vs West Indies, and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 dominated the second half of 2024.
Despite limited opportunities, a few batters made a significant mark in ODI cricket. In this article, we will take a look at the top five run-scorers in ODI cricket in 2024.
Top five highest run-scorers in ODI cricket in 2024:
5. Harsh Thaker (CAN) – 553 runs
Canada all-rounder Harsh Thaker finished 2024 with 553 runs to his name in 15 knocks in ODI cricket. Harsh’s impressive runs tally has come at an average of 46.08 and a strike rate of 71.77.
Thaker showcased his quality with two centuries and two half-centuries in 2024. His highest score, unbeaten 111 off 113 balls, came against UAE in Dubai.
4. Keacy Carty (WI) – 560 runs
West Indies’ Keacy Carty amassed 560 runs in 12 ODIs in 2024. Carty’s form has been a revelation for West Indies as they have strengthened their middle order. He acted as a glue to the team’s explosive lineup. His runs have come at an average of 62.22 and include one hundred and three half-centuries.
His most remarkable batting performance in 2024 came in the third ODI against England at Bridgetown in November, where he scored an unbeaten 128 to lead West Indies to an eight-wicket win.
3. Charith Asalanka (SL) – 605 runs
Charith Asalanka has been a key player for the Sanath Jayasuriya-coached side in ODI cricket in 2024. He was Sri Lanka’s standout performer in their series victory against the West Indies earlier this year.
Asalanka’s ODI tally in 2024 includes 605 runs in 16 innings at an average of 50.41 and a strike rate of 97.11. His only ODI century in 2024 came against Zimbabwe in Colombo.
2. Pathum Nissanka (SL) – 694 runs
Sri Lankan opener Pathum Nissanka achieved the impressive tally of 694 runs in ODI cricket in 2024 at a terrific strike rate of 106.44.
Nissanka’s aggressive intent during the powerplay has been the key for Sri Lanka in dominating opponents early on. He capped off a remarkable 2024 with three centuries and two half-centuries to his name.
His highest individual score in ODIs this year came against Afghanistan, when he hammered a historic double hundred (210*) to script a 42-run win for Sri Lanka.
1. Kusal Mendis (SL) – 742 runs
Kusal Mendis finished 2024 as the highest run-scorer in ODI cricket with 742 runs. Mendis has been a key player for Sri Lanka in ODI format over the last two years. His impressive tally came in 17 matches at an average of 53, including one century and six half-centuries.
Mendis’ highest individual score in 2024 was 143, which came against New Zealand in Dambulla. That innings helped his side win the game by 45 runs and he was named Player of the Match.
