Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket has been nothing short of remarkable. Having played their first ODI in 2009, the Asian underdogs have now cemented themselves as one of the most exciting teams in world cricket.
They played their first 50-over World Cup in the 2015 edition in Australia and then stunned the world by finishing sixth in the 2023 edition, ahead of established teams like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and England.
Known for their spin bowling reserves, they have made noticeable improvements in the batting department. In this article, we will look at the top five highest individual scores by Afghanistan batsmen in ODI cricket.

5. Rahmanullah Gurbaz – 145 vs Bangladesh, 2023, Chattogram
Rahmanullah Gurbaz has emerged as one of Afghanistan’s breakout superstars in limited-overs cricket. He was at his explosive best in the second ODI of Afghanistan’s tour of Bangladesh in 2023.
Batting first, the Afghanistan wicket-keeper batter smashed 145 off 127 balls, including 13 fours and eight sixes. He was well supported by Ibrahim Zadran, who also scored a century and stitched together a 256-run opening partnership to propel the team to 331 runs.
Afghanistan won the game by 142 runs.
4. Azmatullah Omarzai – 149* vs Sri Lanka, 2024, Pallekele
Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai slammed an unbeaten 149-run knock against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in 2024.
Chasing 381, Omarzai light up the crowd scoring 149 off 115 balls, including 13 fours and six sixes. He added 242 runs with Mohammad Nabi for the sixth wicket.
The target proved too big for Afghanistan as despite Omarzai’s brilliance, Sri Lanka won the game comfortably by 42 runs.
3. Rahmanullah Gurbaz – 151 vs Pakistan, 2023, Hambantota
Rahmanullah Gurbaz continued his excellent form in the ODIs when he played a 151-run knock against Pakistan in Hambantota in 2023.
Gurbaz anchored the innings, scoring 151 off 151 balls to help Afghanistan reach 300/5 in the first innings. He was well supported by opener Ibrahim Zadran, who contributed with 80 to set up the foundation for the big score.
Despite his efforts, Pakistan won the nail-biting contest by a wicket.
2. Ibrahim Zadran – 162 vs Sri Lanka, 2022, Pallekele
Ibrahim Zadran was at his best during the third ODI of Afghanistan’s tour of Sri Lanka 2022 in Pallekele.
Opening the innings, Zadran toyed with Sri Lankan bowling attack smashing 162 off 138 balls with the help of 15 fours and four sixes.
He added 154 runs with Najibullah Zadran to propel Afghanistan to a competitive total of 313/8. However, later the hosts won the game by four wickets.
1. Ibrahim Zadran – 177 vs England, 2025, Lahore
Ibrahim Zadran holds the record for the highest individual score by an Afghanistan batsman in ODI cricket with his 177-run knock against England in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at Lahore.
After losing three early wickets for just 37 runs, Zadran led the Afghanistan innings scoring 177 off 146 balls, hitting 12 fours and six sixes. He added 111 runs with Mohammad Nabi to set up Afghanistan’s total of 325.
He received support from Hashmatullah Shahidi, Mohammad Nabi, and Azmatullah Omarzai, who all scored over 40 runs.
