5. Dilip Vengsarkar – 163* vs Australia, 1986
One of India’s most dependable batsmen during the late 1970s and 1980s, Dilip Vengsarkar played a memorable unbeaten knock of 163 against Australia at the Wankhede in 1986.
Vengsarkar’s innings came in the third test of the three-match series. Replying to Australia’s first innings total of 345, Vengsarkar steered India to a first-innings score of 517. Vengsarkar’s innings of 163* consisted of 21 fours and a six.
The game ended in a draw with Australia finishing at 216/2 in their second innings.
4. Sourav Ganguly – 173 vs Sri Lanka, 1997
One of India’s most influential captains ever, Sourav Ganguly dismantled the Sri Lankan bowling attack with his emphatic innings of 173 in Mumbai in 1997. Ganguly’s remarkable knock came in the third test of the three-match test series.
Batting first on a batting-friendly pitch, Ganguly pushed India to a huge total of 512. He added 256 runs with Sachin Tendulkar for the fourth wicket, keeping the Sri Lankan bowlers at bay.
The match ended in a boring draw with Sri Lanka finishing with the score 166/7 while chasing the target of 333. Ganguly was named Player of the Match.
3. Sunil Gavaskar – 205 vs West Indies, 1978
Legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar played a marathon innings of 205 at his home ground in Mumbai against West Indies in the 1978 series.
Batting first on the good pitch at the Wankhede, Gavaskar toiled the Caribbean bowlers to score a gritty double hundred (205 off 342 balls) in the first innings.
Gavaskar’s emphatic innings along with Gundappa Viswanath’s half-century pushed India to a fighting total of 424 in their first innings. The game ended in a draw with India replying to West Indies’ 493 in the first innings with 224/2 in their second innings.
2. Vinod Kambli – 224 vs England, 1993
Left-handed Mumbai batsman Vinod Kambli started his test career in dreamland. Kambli scored four hundreds in the first seven test matches of his career.
One of Kambli’s most remarkable knocks came against England at his home ground, the Wankhede stadium. He scored a blistering 224 in India’s first innings. Kambli’s excellent double hundred comprised 23 fours. His marathon effort from one end guided India to a massive first-innings score of 591.
India won the test match by an innings and 15 runs to win the three-match series 3-0.
1. Virat Kohli – 235 vs England, 2016
2016 was a dream year for Virat Kohli. He dominated the test arena by scoring three double-hundreds in a single year.
One of those came against England in the fourth test of the India vs England 2016 test series at the Wankhede.
Kohli’s epic knock comprised 25 fours and one six. Throughout his innings, Virat adopted a counter-attacking approach and used the depth of the crease against spinners.
India won the game comfortably by an innings and 36 runs and Kohli was named Player of the Match.
