Four Pakistani batsmen have registered a triple century in test cricket.

The Pakistan cricket team was one of the strongest forces in test cricket from the 1980s to the late 2010s before falling off the cliff. This period saw them going to the top of the ICC test team rankings twice – in 1988 and 2016.

While they dominated a hefty portion of their test matches in this period through their bowlers, their batsmen too played a significant role in their success, especially in the first 15 years of the 21st century as the pitches were good for batting.

Pakistan have produced about a dozen batsmen who can be called legends of test cricket. These batters produced some mountainous knocks that buried the opposition.

In this article, we will look at the top five highest individual scores made by Pakistani batsmen in test cricket.

Top five highest individual scores by Pakistan batsmen in test cricket:

5. Javed Miandad – 280* vs India, 1983

In the fourth test of India’s 1982/83 tour of Pakistan, Javed Miandad scored 280* off 460 balls in the first innings in Hyderabad (Sind). Apart from Miandad, opener Mudassar Nazar also piled up a double century. These knocks helped Pakistan post a mammoth total of 581 runs in their first innings.

India crumbled for 189 and 273 (following on) and lost the test by an innings. Miandad’s marathon effort was rewarded with the Man of the Match award.

4. Azhar Ali – 302* vs West Indies, 2016

Azhar Ali was the last Pakistani batsman to notch up a triple century in test cricket. He achieved it against West Indies in Dubai in 2016.

In Pakistan’s first innings, opener Azhar Ali scored 302* runs off 469 deliveries with the help of 23 fours and two sixes. His triple ton guided Pakistan to a total of 579.

While the West Indies were bowled out for 357 in their first innings, the match took an exciting turn when Pakistan were bundled for only 123 in their second innings, setting a target of 346 for the West Indies. The visitors aimed for the chase, but fell 57 runs short of the target.

3. Younis Khan – 313 vs Sri Lanka, 2009

Nine years after his test debut, Younis Khan finally managed to breach the 300-run mark in test cricket when he amassed 313 runs against Sri Lanka in the Karachi test in 2009.

In reply to Sri Lanka’s huge first innings total of 644, Younis led Pakistan to an even bigger total of 765 with his epic knock of 313 runs off 568 balls, which included 27 fours and four sixes. The match ended in a draw.

2. Inzamam-ul-Haq – 329 vs New Zealand, 2002

A decade after his debut, Inzamam-ul-Haq registered his maiden triple test century. He did it against New Zealand in Lahore in 2002.

Batting first, Pakistan were guided by Inzamam’s 329, during which he cracked 38 fours and nine sixes, to help his side post a huge target of 643. The visitors were bowled out for 73 and 246 (following on) and lost the test by an innings and 324 runs. Inzamam bagged the Man of the Match award.

1. Hanif Mohammad – 337 vs West Indies, 1958

Hanif Mohammad holds the record for the highest individual score by a Pakistani batsman in test cricket, with his knock of 337 runs against West Indies in Bridgetown in 1958. This is one of the, if not the greatest innings played by a Pakistani batsman.

West Indies had scored 579 in their first innings and then bowled Pakistan out for only 106 and enforced the follow-on with more than two days left in the game.

Pakistan and Hanif Mohammad began the second innings on day 3 and batted until day 5. The opener scored 337 runs while batting for 970 minutes! His knock helped Pakistan reach 657 and save the test match.
