India have scored three 400+ totals in fourth innings in test cricket.

The Indian cricket team is one of the most successful sides in the history of test cricket. The Asian Giants have at times been an indomitable force in Asian conditions for a long time, and in recent years, they have become a potent unit even when travelling outside Asia.

Their recent test match victories in South Africa, England, and Australia showcase how many talented and quality players India are producing.

Indian cricket has long been known to churn out a spate of legendary batsmen who have ruled different eras. From Sunil Gavaskar to Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli, each batter has dominated test cricket in their era.

These great batsmen have helped India post a few tall totals in test cricket while batting in the fourth innings of a test match, which is mostly the toughest period for batting.

On that note, let’s take a look at the top five highest totals by India in the fourth innings of test cricket.

Highest totals by India in fourth innings in tests:

5. 387/4 vs England, Chennai, 2008

During the Chennai test against England in 2008, India successfully chased down the mammoth target of 387 runs.

Batting first, England notched up 316 runs while India were bundled out for 241 in their first innings. England made 311/9d in the second innings after Andrew Strauss and Paul Collingwood hammered fantastic centuries.

While chasing 387, Virender Sehwag slammed a quick-fire 83 off 68 balls. Sachin Tendulkar played a match-winning knock of 103*, which guided India to a six-wicket win.

4. 397 vs England, Lord’s, 2002

India scored 397 runs in the fourth innings during Lord’s test against England in 2002. Talking about the match, England made 487 after Nasser Hussain played a brilliant knock of 155 runs. In reply, India were knocked over for 221 as Virender Sehwag top-scored with 84 runs.

England declared their second innings at 301/6 and set a huge target of 568 runs. While chasing, Ajit Agarkar scored an unbeaten 109, but the visitors were bundled out for 397 runs. England won the match by 170 runs.

3. 406/4 vs West Indies, Port of Spain, 1976

India recorded their highest successful run chase in test cricket against the West Indies in 1976 when they chased down the target of 403 runs in Port of Spain.

West Indies made 359 after Viv Richards slammed 177 runs. The visitors managed to score 228 runs in their first innings.

West Indies posted 271/6d in their second innings and set a massive target of 403 runs. While chasing, Sunil Gavaskar (102) and Gundaapa Viswanath (112) registered match-winning centuries as India sealed a six-wicket win.

2. 429/8 vs England, The Oval, 1979

India’s second-highest fourth innings total of 429/8 came during the Oval test against England in 1979. Batting first, England scored 305 and India replied with 202 runs in their first innings.

England opener Geoffrey Boycott’s 125 runs powered the hosts to 334/8d. While chasing 448, Sunil Gavaskar made 221 as the visitors scored 429/8. India managed to draw the game.

1. 445 vs Australia, Adelaide, 1978

India notched up their highest total in the fourth innings (445) in test cricket during the Adelaide test against Australia in 1978.

The hosts posted a mammoth first innings score of 505 runs. Graham Yallop (121) and Bob Simpson (100) raised centuries for Australia. In reply, India were bowled out for 269 runs.

Australia then scored 256 runs in their second innings, setting up a huge target of 493 for the visitors.

While chasing 493, the visitors were all out for 445 runs. Mohinder Amarnath played a fighting knock of 86 runs, but it went in vain as Australia won the match by 47 runs.
