India made their ODI cricket debut in 1974.

Talking about ODI cricket, the Indian cricket team is the second-most successful team in the world in this format, after Australia.

India have won two ODI World Cup trophies, in 1983 and 2011. They have played the most number of ODI matches, and won the second-most number of ODIs, behind only Australia.

Their success has been on the back of their world-class batsmen. In Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, India boast two of the greatest batsmen in ODI cricket of all-time.

The Indian batsmen have been responsible for some of the tallest scores made in ODI cricket. Let us see the top 10 highest totals India have piled up in ODIs.

10. 392/4 vs New Zealand, Christchurch, 2009

Sachin Tendulkar played one of the most entertaining ODI knocks of his career when he struck 163* runs off 133 balls against New Zealand in Christchurch in 2009. Tendulkar hit 16 fours and five sixes in his knock that helped India finish with a total of 392 runs.

Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni provided the finishing touch to the innings. India won by 58 runs and Tendulkar bagged the Man of the Match award.

9. 397/4 vs New Zealand, Mumbai, 2023

India produced a sensational batting performance in the semi-final of the 2023 World Cup against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium, with Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer cracking sizzling centuries.

Their tons helped India post a huge total of 397 runs and then Mohammed Shami’s record-breaking seven-wicket haul restricted New Zealand to 327 runs.

8. 399/5 vs Australia, Indore, 2023

Australia ran into a marauding Indian batting order at the Holkar Stadium in Indore in 2023. Batting first, India gained momentum through hundreds from Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer before KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav blasted quickfire half-centuries to take the total to 399 runs.

Australia couldn’t get going at all in their chase and were bowled out for 217 runs with Ashwin and Jadeja taking three wickets each.

7. 401/3 vs South Africa, Gwalior, 2010

In 2010 against South Africa in Gwalior, Sachin Tendulkar became the first batsman to hit a double century in ODI cricket, scoring 200* (147) with 25 fours and three sixes. Tendulkar’s double century and fifties from Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni propelled India to over 400, finishing with 401.

India won the match comfortably by a huge margin of 153 runs.

6. 404/5 vs Sri Lanka, Kolkata, 2014

Opener Rohit Sharma created history by recording the highest individual score in ODI cricket when he slammed 264 off 173 balls against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Rohit walloped 33 fours and nine sixes in his record-breaking knock that single-handedly took India to 404. India won the match by a whopping 153 runs.

5. 409/8 vs Bangladesh, Chattogram, 2022

Ishan Kishan entered the elite list of ODI double centuries when he struck 210 (131), including 24 fours and 10 sixes, against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2022.

Kishan’s blitz and a century from Virat Kohli helped India to a total of 409, chasing which Bangladesh were all-out for only 182.

4. 410/4 vs Netherlands, Bengaluru, 2023

India utterly demolished the Netherlands’ bowling attack in their World Cup 2023 encounter in Bengaluru. Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli recorded half-centuries, while KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer plundered centuries as India finished with 410/4. The Dutch were no match to the hosts as they were bowled out for 250 runs.

3. 413/5 vs Bermuda, Port of Spain, 2007

In India’s dismal 2007 World Cup campaign in West Indies, their only success came against Bermuda as Virender Sehwag cracked 114 runs, while Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh hit fifties to take India to 413. Bermuda had a terrible batting collapse as they were knocked over for only 156 runs in the chase.

2. 414/7 vs Sri Lanka, Rajkot, 2009

One of the most memorable games of ODI cricket happened between India and Sri Lanka in Rajkot in 2009. Riding on Sehwag’s 146 and fifties from Dhoni and Tendulkar, India finished with a daunting total of 414 runs.

In the chase, Sri Lanka’s top-three took them to over 300 runs with 13 overs to spare. But the Indian bowlers made a strong comeback and held their nerves to clinch the game by only three runs as Dilshan’s 160-run knock went in vain.

1. 418/5 vs West Indies, Indore, 2011

India’s highest total in ODI cricket is 418 runs, which they made against West Indies in Indore in 2011 on the back of Virender Sehwag’s sensational double century.

Sehwag became the second Indian batsman after Tendulkar to record a double hundred in ODI cricket, scoring 219 (149) with 25 fours and seven sixes. Sehwag’s double hundred and fifties from Gambhir and Raina took India to their highest total of 418.

India won the game by 153 runs.
