Australia are placed in Group B in the tournament.

Monday, February 16, proved to be the worst day for Australia as they faced their second consecutive loss in the T20 World Cup 2026. Co-hosts Sri Lanka defeated the Kangaroos to secure their place in the Super 8. The AUS vs SL match took place at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele.

Despite Mitchell Marsh’s return as the captain and three crucial changes in the playing XI, the T20 World Cup 2021 champions completely failed to dominate the Dasun Shanaka & Co., with the latter having the home advantage in the match.

Marsh (54) and Travis Head (56) hammered half-centuries to propel the scoreboard to a powerful total of 181/10. Josh Inglis (27) and Glenn Maxwell (22) made crucial contributions with the bat, as Australia lost their last wicket on the final delivery of the 20th over.

Despite a respectable total, the Australian bowlers completely flopped to dominate Sri Lanka‘s batting unit. Opener Pathum Nissanka smacked an unbeaten century, while Kusal Mendis hit a half-century to bring the team home by eight wickets. The Lankan side easily won this match to qualify for the next round.

Australia are placed in Group B alongside Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Oman. They commenced the campaign with a victory against Ireland.

However, they suffered one of the biggest upsets in the history of the T20 World Cup by losing the clash against Zimbabwe. Now, they have also lost against Sri Lanka.

Group B points table after match 30, AUS vs SL-

PosTeamMatchesWonLostPointsNRR
1Sri Lanka (Q)3306+2.462
2Zimbabwe2204+1.984
3Australia3122+0.414
4Ireland 3122+0.150
5Oman (E)3030-4.546

At present, Sri Lanka take the top spot in the Group B points table with six points and are the only team that have qualified for the Super 8. Zimbabwe take the next spot with four points, while the Kangaroos and Ireland grab the third and fourth places with two points each.

Notably, the Aussies have only one match left against Oman, who have been eliminated from the tournament. If they win the clash, they can finish in the second spot with four points. Australia can no longer top the points table.

However, Zimbabwe have two games left against Ireland and Sri Lanka. If they win both matches, they will qualify for the Super 8 with Sri Lanka. If they win either of the two encounters, the outcome will be the same, and the Kangaroos will be eliminated.

If Zimbabwe lose both of their next games and Australia win their last encounter, then the Kangaroos will move into the Super 8 Round with Sri Lanka. However, the Net Run-Rate (NNR) will come into action because both Zimbabwe and Australia will have equal four points in such a scenario.

However, if Zimbabwe lose both matches and Australia win the next game, the Mitchell Marsh-led side will definitely have a better NNR.
