India are still waiting to lay their hands on next ICC title since the ICC Champions Trophy 2013. They came closer thrice in the last two years, but couldn’t deal with the knockout punch. Australia knocked India twice in the finals of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 and ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, while England knocked out India in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final in Australia. This was the last T20I game where captain Rohit Sharma played in a T20I.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is set to make his comeback in T20Is in the first T20I against Afghanistan. Mohali’s IS Bindra Stadium will host the first game of the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan on Thursday. This will be India’s final T20I assignment before the T20 World Cup 2024 in June. Captain Rohit Sharma has missed the bulk of T20I games for India in the last 14 months.
Rohit Sharma missed 28 T20I games
Team India played 28 T20I games since the last T20 World Cup’s semi-final loss against England. Rohit Sharma was away from the action in all of these encounters. Rohit missed a total of 28 T20I games for India in the last 14 months. Rohit was busy playing ODIs and Tests in the year where ICC Cricket World Cup was played.
In Rohit’s absence, India appointed 5 different captains (6 Including Ruturaj Gaikwad in Asian Games 2023) in 7 bilateral series they played. Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah all of these players got the chance to lead the Indian side in T20Is. Rohit was part of the Indian ODI team and test team but stayed away from the T20I camp along with Virat Kohli.
Ravindra Jadeja holds the unfortunate record of missing most T20I matches between two consecutive appearances for India. Not once, but twice in his career Jadeja missed 66 T20I matches in row for India. The first instance came in the period from 9th July, 2017 to 3rd August, 2019 while the second phase came in between 31st August 2022 to 12th December 2023.
Indian players to miss most T20I matches between two consecutive appearances:
1. Ravindra Jadeja – 66 matches (9 Jul 2017 – 3 Aug 2019)
2. Ravindra Jadeja – 66 matches (31 Aug 2022 – 12 Dec 2023)
3. Ravichandran Ashwin – 65 matches (9 Jul 2017 – 3 Nov 2021)
4. Dinesh Karthik – 60 matches (11 May 2010 – 9 Jul 2017)
5. Dinesh Karthik – 60 matches (27 Feb 2019 – 9 Jun 2022)
Rohit Sharma’s comeback gives a clear signal about his participation in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and USA. Earlier it was expected that Indian team management might play without Rohit or Virat in the tournament as youngsters have done a magnificent job for India in the last 14 months. Rohit and Virat Kohli’s comeback will change the balance of the playing XI.
