Virat Kohli made 93 in the first ODI between IND vs NZ in Vadodara.

Virat Kohli moved to the second spot in an unwanted list of records despite his amazing knock in the first ODI between India and New Zealand. The 1st ODI was played on January 11, 2026, at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.

Interestingly, it was the first men’s ODI game at the Vadodara Stadium. India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bat first.

New Zealand ODI openers Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls added 117 runs for the first wicket. Conway made 56 runs in 67 balls, while Nicholls scored 62 runs in 69 balls as they laid a good platform for the rest of the batters.

Daryl Mitchell continued the good work, hitting 84 in 71 balls with five fours and three sixes. Despite the middle order failing to fire, Black Caps managed to make 300/8 in 50 overs. Kristian Clarke made 24* in 17 balls. For India, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, and Mohammed Siraj picked two wickets each.

India had a decent opening as Rohit Sharma added 39 runs with Shubman Gill, as the veteran batter got out for 26 runs. Shubman Gill made 56 in 71 balls in a struggling way, hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes.

Virat Kohli looked in good touch and played flawlessly on a batting-friendly pitch. He also added 77 runs for the third wicket with vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, who made 49 runs in 47 balls with four fours and one six.

Kohli looked good for his knock, smashing fours for fun as New Zealand bowlers had no answer to his shots and captain Michael Bracewell looked out of ideas.

He was looking good for another ODI century and stepped out to play a shot against Kyle Jamieson, but he didn’t get the required space, and as a result, he gave away an easy catch. He was dismissed for 93 runs in 91 balls with 8 fours and one six.

This was the seventh time that Virat Kohli got out for a score in the 90s in ODIs. This is the second-most times any batter in ODIs has gotten out for 90s, and Kohli joined the likes of Aravinda De Silva, Grant Flower, Nathan Astle, and Kane Williamson, who all fell in 90s seven times.

The most times a batter has fallen in the 90s in ODIs is 17, and the ‘God of Cricket’ Sachin Tendulkar held this unwanted record.
