How Sanju Samson overcame struggles to conquer T20 World Cup 2026?

Sanju Samson was adjudged Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, Sanju Samson was not even in contention to be part of India’s playing XI. The right-handed batter struggled with his form in the T20I series against New Zealand ahead of the tournament, scoring just 46 runs in five games with multiple single-digit scores.

His poor batting form forced the management to promote Ishan Kishan to open alongside Abhishek Sharma. Samson warmed the bench in India’s initial games, except for the clash against Namibia in the league stage.

Sanju, who was picked in Abhishek’s absence due to illness, failed to make a mark by getting out for 22 runs. Despite Abhishek’s continuous batting struggles, he was retained as an opener alongside Ishan Kishan. However, the shocking defeat against South Africa in the opening game of the Super 8 round prompted India to shuffle their batting order.

After defeat against the Proteas, Suryakumar Yadav & Co. were caught in a challenging situation. They had to win both games against Zimbabwe and the West Indies to book a berth in the semi-final.

Ahead of the crucial clashes, Samson was reinstated as India’s opener and wicket-keeper in the playing XI. In the must-win game against the West Indies in the Super 8, Samson showcased his class and slammed an unbeaten 97 runs in the 196-run chase.

Notably, key Indian batters lost their wickets cheaply at the start; however, Samson kept his patience and played an anchor role in the team’s victory.

The wicket-keeper batter followed up with his incredible form in the semi-final against England too, hammering a quickfire 89 runs off 42 deliveries. His knock set the platform for the team’s mammoth total of 253 runs in the first innings.

Till the semi-finals, Samson proved himself to be the backbone of India’s batting unit, who took the pressure off the middle-order and lower-order batters with his blistering starts. Eventually, in the final against New Zealand, the 31-year-old scored his third consecutive half-century.

Hitting 89 runs with an opening stand of 98 runs with Abhishek. Sanju set the stage for India’s gigantic total (255/5) in the encounter. However, Abhishek (52) and Ishan (54) also made crucial contributions with their half-centuries.

Samson was adjudged Player of the Tournament

Samson’s batting heroics in three consecutive games in the T20 World Cup 2026 brought him into the spotlight. With 321 runs in just five games, he ended as India’s leading run-scorer in the tournament and third overall.

From a player who was overlooked in the playing XI at the start to clinch the Player of the Tournament award, Samson turned his fortunes in the T20 World Cup 2026.

His pivotal role in India’s journey to the title will be inscribed in golden letters in the record books and will be remembered for ages.
