The International Cricket Council board has suspended Sri Lanka Cricket.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board has suspended Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership of the ICC with immediate effect.
The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.
The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in due course.
Government interference proves costly for Sri Lanka Cricket
After Sri Lanka’s poor performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, and particularly heavy defeat at the hands of the hosts, India, it has been a difficult phase for Sri Lanka cricket. The Sri Lankan sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe sacked the national cricket board (Sri Lanka Cricket) on Monday, 6th November and appointed former World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga as the interim chief.
Not only that, but after a couple of days, Sri Lankan parliament unanimously passed the resolution calling for sacking of the entire Sri Lankan cricket’s governing body. The opposition party’s main leader Sajith Premadasa moved the resolution for the removal of SLC, which was unanimously passed in the parliament.
According to ICC’s rules, a country’s ruling government shouldn’t take decisions on the country’s cricket governing body. Which is the primary reason why ICC has suspended the Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) with immediate effect.
