India defeated New Zealand by four wickets to win the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 came to a conclusion on Sunday, March 9 as India defeated New Zealand by wickets to clinch their third title.
After being asked to bowl first, the Men in Blue displayed great control to restrict New Zealand to 251 in the first innings. Spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy starred for India, picking up two wickets each, while Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja took a wicket each.
Daryl Mitchell top-scored for the Kiwis with 63 off 101 balls. The No. 4 batsman was criticized for his slow approach, but his effort ensured that New Zealand played all 50 overs. Later, all-rounder Michael Bracewell applied the finishing touch with 53 off 40 balls.
In reply, India started the chase excellently, reaching the 100-run mark without losing a wicket in the 18th over. Rohit Sharma played aggressively, scoring 76 off 83 balls.
The Men in Blue, however, lost their way and slipped to 122/3 due to some excellent bowling by New Zealand spinners in the middle overs.
Shreyas Iyer (48) and Axar Patel (29) stabilized the innings, adding 61 runs for the fourth wicket. After Iyer and Patel’s dismissal, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya added 38 runs for the sixth wicket to guide the team to a four-wicket win.
The tournament saw high-scoring games in Pakistan, but the story was quite different in Dubai, where spinners found significant support. India and New Zealand finished in the first and second spots in Group A, while South Africa and Australia were the top two teams from Group B.
Hosts Pakistan, Bangladesh, and England had a poor campaign and went home winless. The tournament also saw the retirement of one of Australia’s all-time greats, Steve Smith, who hung up his boots after the semi-final defeat against India.
Let’s take a look at all the award winners and prize money following conclusion of the tournament.
