India defeated Bangladesh by six wickets to kick off their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.
India kicked off their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a win over Bangladesh in Dubai. The target of 229 proved to be tricky to chase, but Shubman Gill’s century propelled India over the line.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and elected to bat first. They got off to a terrible start as they lost their first five wickets for only 35 runs with Mohammed Shami, Harshit Rana and Axar Patel making early dents.
Then, Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy helped Bangladesh stay afloat. They didn’t lose their wickets for more than 30 overs but also failed to hit boundaries regularly as India kept a leash on the two batters.
They added 154 runs in 206 balls. Both batsmen fell in the death overs, where Mohammed Shami completed a five-wicket haul to bundle Bangladesh out for 228. Jaker scored 68 runs off 114 balls and Hridoy scored 100 runs off 118 balls.
In the chase, captain Rohit Sharma once again got India off to a flyer as he hammered 41 runs off 36 balls on a pitch that was now assisting the spinners considerably. While Virat Kohli found it difficult to get going, Shubman Gill was smooth at the other end, getting to his fifty in 69 balls.
India lost Kohli, Axar and Shreyas Iyer in quick succession but Gill and Rahul provided a semblance of calm. They absorbed the pressure and rotated the strike. As the required runs tickled down, the duo creamed some attractive boundaries as well.
The duo stitched an 87-run unbeaten stand to take India home, with Gill notching up yet another ODI ton.
