From 1998 to 2025: List of all Man of the Tournament award winners at ICC Champions Trophy

South Africa won the inaugural ICC Champions Trophy in 1998.
The first edition of the ICC Champions Trophy, formerly known as the ICC Knockout Trophy, was held in 1998 in Bangladesh. The concept of the competition was introduced by the ICC to keep ODI cricket relevant and interesting between the four-year cycle of World Cups.
In its 27 years of existence, eight editions of the tournament have been played in the following years: 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2013, and 2017.
While the tournaments were won by the team’s overall effort, some players led their sides from the front with incredible individual performances and won Man of the Tournament awards for their contributions. Notably, however, the Man of the Tournament award was not given in 2000 and 2002 editions of the tournament.
On that note, let’s take a look at all Man of the Tournament award winners at ICC Champions Trophy history.
List of all Man of the Tournament award winners at ICC Champions Trophy
1. 1998 – Jacques Kallis
Known for their “chokers” tag in ICC tournaments, South Africa’s triumph in the inaugural season of the ICC Champions Trophy in 1998 is often forgotten.
The Proteas defeated the West Indies by four wickets in the final to clinch what remains their only ICC trophy till date.
Jacques Kallis was named Player of the Tournament for scoring 164 runs and taking eight wickets in the tournament. He also scored 37 runs and took five wickets in the final.
2. 2004 – Ramnaresh Sarwan
Former West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan played a key role in West Indies’ historic 2004 Champions Trophy campaign.
Batting in the middle order, he scored 166 runs in four matches (the second highest in the tournament) at an average of 83, including two half-centuries.
Sarwan guided the Caribbeans to the final with an unbeaten 56 against Pakistan in the semi-finals. His performance in the final was underwhelming as he was dismissed for just five in a chase of 218 runs.
3. 2006 – Chris Gayle
Chris Gayle was the first player to have won Man of the Tournament award in ICC Champions Trophy history without being part of the title-winning side.
The southpaw capped off the impressive tournament with 474 runs, a tally that remains the highest in a single campaign. Unfortunately, he couldn’t get going in the final against Australia and was dismissed for 37 runs.
4. 2009 – Ricky Ponting
Guiding Australia to the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy remains one of Ricky Ponting’s greatest achievements as a captain.
The No. 3 batsman topped the run-scorers’ chart in the tournament with 288 runs in five innings at an average of 72. His best score in the competition (111*) came in the semi-final against arch-rivals England during the run chase.
Despite a forgettable final, where he was dismissed for just one run, he was named Player of the Tournament.
5. 2013 – Shikhar Dhawan
India cruised to their second Champions Trophy title in 2013 with an unbeaten record. They defeated England by five runs in the tournament final in Birmingham.
Playing his first ICC tournament, Shikhar Dhawan emerged as the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 363 runs in five matches at an average of 90.75 including two centuries and a half century.
Dhawan’s most impressive knock came in the opening game of the tournament against South Africa, where he smashed 114 off 94 balls to help India secure a 26-run win. The southpaw registered a half-century against Sri Lanka in the semi-finals, but was dismissed for 31 runs in the 20-over final.
He was named Man of the Tournament.
6. 2017 – Hasan Ali
Pakistan made history by clinching their first ICC Champions Trophy title in 2017 after defeating India in the final at The Oval, London.
The Asian giants displayed remarkable consistency throughout the tournament, defeating some of the strongest teams, including India, England, and South Africa, on their way to the title.
Their bowling department was led by Hasan Ali, who took 13 wickets in five games at an average of 14.69. He was particularly impressive in the semi-final and final against England and India, recording bowling figures of 3/35 and 3/19.
His consistent performance earned him the Man of the Tournament award.
7. 2025 – Rachin Ravindra
Rachin Ravindra became second player after Chris Gayle to win Man of the Tournament award in ICC Champions Trophy despite their side not winning the tournament.
Rachin Ravindra played only four games in the tournament and scored 263 runs, which included two hundreds. He also scalped three wickets in the tournament. He beat the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Mohammed Shami, and Varun Chakravarthy to receive this accolade.
