Australia defeated New Zealand by 5 runs in a thriller of a battle in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Australia have managed to defend their humongous total of 388 runs by just 5 runs against New Zealand in a Trans-Tasman rivalry game played at HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. New Zealand came so close to Australia's total and finished their innings at 383 runs in 50 overs. New Zealand made a valiant effort in a thriller encounter but couldn’t cross the winning line. Rachin Ravindra (116) with a magnificent century took the charge of Kiwi chase but he perished soon after scoring his second hundred in the tournament. Jimmy Neesham (58) also made a gritty effort in the end but couldn’t get NZ over the line. 

Batting first, Australia posted 388 runs in 50 overs. Australian openers Travis Head (109) and David Warner (81) had a wonderful 175 runs opening stand in 19 overs that set the tone for Australia throughout their innings. Glenn Maxwell (41), Josh Inglis (38), and Pat Cummins (37) played good cameos to take Australia over their 3rd consecutive 350+ score. New Zealand never looked out of the game when they came to bat in the second innings and challenged the five-time World Cup champions. Rachin Ravindra showed a glimpse of a great future for New Zealand cricket but they just fell short by a margin of 5 runs.

New Zealand did challenge the Australian but they couldn’t go over the line in Dharamsala. Australia with a win over the Kiwis have increased two points in their tally. Australia have now won their 4th consecutive game in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and they stand 4th position in the points table with 8 points and 4 wins out of 6. Australia’s net run rate is +0.970.

On the other hand New Zealand after two back-to-back defeats remain at 3rd position with a similar situation as Australia. They also have 8 points in 6 games with 4 wins. New Zealand’s net run rate stands at +1.232 after the end of the 6th league game. South Africa are currently top of the table with 10 points.

Australian opener David Warner had a wonderful outing in Dharamshala as he played a magnificent knock against New Zealand. David Warner smashed 81 runs in 65 balls to help Australia open with a flyer alongside Travis Head. David Warner has now jumped up to 2nd place with 413 runs.

South African wicket-keeper Quinton De Kock is No. 1 with 431 runs. New Zealand batter Rachin Ravindra is now 3rd after a valiant knock of 116 runs against Australia. Ravindra has scored 406 runs in six innings. South African batter Aiden Markram is 4th with 356 runs. Indian top-order batter Virat Kohli is now moved down to 5th place with 354 runs.

There was a battle between the two spinners from Australia and New Zealand in the top wicket-takers list. Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa has come out as number one with 16 wickets. Zampa bowled brilliantly in the game at HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala and picked up wickets in his spell.

Kiwi all-rounder Mitchell Santner remains second on the list with 14 wickets. Santner picked up one wicket against Australia. Pakistan’s pacer Shaheen Afridi is 3rd with 13 wickets. Shaheen Afridi picked up 3 wickets against South Africa in Chennai. South African all-rounder Marco Jansen is 4th with 13 wickets, and Gerald Coetzee is 5th with 12 wickets.
