Indian opener Shubman Gill is likely to miss high-voltage clash against Pakistan as well.
Team India had a massive setback before the start of their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign. Indian opener Shubman Gill missed the first game against Australia and has been ruled out of the second game against Afghanistan scheduled to be played at Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi. Indian batting coach Vikram Rathore has confirmed in the pre-match conference that Gill has been recovering well and was hospitalised in Chennai.
Shubman Gill may also be ruled out of the Pakistan game scheduled to be played at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad as he needs more time to recover from dengue. Gill has been suffering from dengue fever since he landed in Chennai. Gill will probably join the Indian camp before their scheduled game against Bangladesh at MCA Stadium in Pune on 18th October. Gill is currently in Chennai and hasn’t travelled with the team.
Vikram Rathore provides update on Gill
Indian batting coach Vikram Rathore confirmed in the pre-match press conference, “He (Gill) is recovering well. He was hospitalised in Chennai, yes, but that was more as a precaution. He is back in the hotel, he is recovering well. So, being monitored by the medical team and whatever update we get, we are hoping that he will recover pretty soon. He is looking good actually.” Team management is hopeful that Gill will recover quickly and join the Indian campaign.
Earlier it was reported that Shubman Gill was hospitalised in Chennai for a day after the Australia game and was released after a day. BCCI provided a medical update on Gill who was ruled out of the Afghanistan game on Monday. Ishan Kishan opened the innings along with captain Rohit Sharma against Australia at Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. Kishan will be playing against Afghanistan as well.
Shubman Gill has been in top form in limited overs format and has smashed 5 ODI centuries this year - including a double-century. Indian top-order struggled against Australia and lost their opening three wickets inside the first two overs in Chennai. Ishan Kishan (0), Rohit Sharma (0), and Shreyas Iyer (0) failed miserably. India will next take on Afghanistan on Wednesday in Delhi.
