Rishabh Pant became the first Indian wicket-keeper batter to hit twin centuries in a test match.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has punished India cricketer Rishabh Pant for violating the code of conduct on the fourth day of play in the first test match against England in Leeds.
With a century in each of the current test innings, Pant has had an incredible start to his England trip. As a result, he became the second overall (after Andy Flower) and the first designated Indian wicket-keeper batter to achieve the feat.
Rishabh Pant scored 118 in the second innings after scoring 134 in the first.
The India test vice-captain helped India set England 371 to win the series opener by stitching a huge 195-run combination with opener KL Rahul (137) for the fourth wicket. On the fifth and last day of the match, England need 350 more runs to win the test, having all ten of their wickets intact.
Rishabh Pant punished by the ICC for his outburst against the umpire
Rishabh Pant was chastised for his on-field behaviour during England’s opening innings with the bat, despite having an outstanding performance with the bat during the Headingley test, which included two hundreds.
When Harry Brook and Ben Stokes were batting in the 61st over of England’s innings, Pant was observed discussing the state of the ball with the umpires.
The wicket-keeper threw the ball on the ground in front of the umpires to express his disapproval after they refused to replace it after examining it with the ball gauge.
Pant was judged to have violated “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an International Match,” which is covered by Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
Additionally, as it was Pant’s first offense in 24 months, one demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record.
“There was no disciplinary hearing as Pant admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees. Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points,” the ICC statement read.
The charges were brought in by the on-field umpires Chris Gaffaney, Paul Reiffel, along with the third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Mike Burns.
