No Indian named as ICC announces women's ODI team of the year 2023

Chamari Athapaththu has been named captain of the ICC women’s ODI team of the year 2023.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the women’s ODI team of the year 2023. Surprisingly, no Indian player made the cut into the team. Australian players dominate the list of 11 players in the ICC women’s ODI team of the year 2023. Sri Lankan opening batter Chamari Athapaththu has been picked as captain of the side. Bangladesh’s Nahida Akter is the second Asian member of the team.

Apart from Sri Lankan Chamari Athapaththu and Nahida Akter from Bangladesh, no other player from Asia made it to the ICC women’s ODI XI of the year 2023. Five Australian players are part of the ICC’s women’s ODI team of the year 2023. Along with five Australians, two New Zealanders and one each from England and South Africa got a place in selected playing XI.

Young Australian opener Phoebe Litchfield and experienced Sri Lankan star Chamari Athapaththu are the two openers in the playing XI. The 20-year-old Litchfield batted with an average of 53.8 in 2023. Sri Lankan opener Chamari Athapaththu helped her side get a few historic wins in previous year with her splendid batting performances.

Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry found her place as number 3 batter in the team. New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr is in the middle-order along with Australia’s Beth Mooney and England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt. Beth Mooney will be taking responsibility behind stumps. She had a terrific year in 2023 and scored 439 runs averaging over 60.

Australian all-rounder Ash Gardner has also found a place in the ICC women’s ODI team of the year 2023. Along with her, Australia’s Annabel Sutherland, South Africa’s Nadine de Klerk, New Zealand’s Lea Tahuhu and Bagladesh’s Nahida Akter will take on the responsibility of bowling attack in the team. Nahida Akter finished as second second-highest wicket-taker (20) in the 2023 calendar year.
