Australia hammer England by 8 wickets in the second Ashes test at the Gabba to stay on top of the ICC World Test Championship points table.

The Australians are on a roll, and England have no clue how to stop this juggernaut. Australia brushed the visitors aside in the second test in Brisbane to take a comfortable 2-0 lead. The way things are moving, it can end in a 5-0 mauling for Brendon McCullum & Co.

Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bat first. The English managed to post 334 runs on the board in the first innings. In reply, Australia took a massive 177-run lead as they closed their first innings with 511 to their credit.

England’s batting unit had a mountain to climb to make this match interesting. But the English failed to cope as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals before the Australians wrapped up their innings for 241 runs. England could only amass a 64-run lead, which was just not enough to challenge the home team. Australia chased down the total with 8 wickets in hand.

The ICC WTC runners-up stay on top of the points table with an impeccable record. The Aussies have won all five of the matches that they have played in this cycle, accumulating 60 points with 100 PCT. Following them are the defending champions, South Africa, with 75 PCT. The Proteas have won three out of their four matches.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan occupy third and fourth positions, respectively. The whitewash against South Africa had a cascading effect on India’s rankings as they dropped to fifth with 48.15 PCT. The two-time WTC finalists have played almost half of their matches in the 2025-27 WTC cycle.

The 2021 WTC champions, New Zealand, have just opened their campaign as they settled for a draw at Christchurch against the gritty West Indies. For England, the campaign is sliding downhill after consecutive defeats against Australia in the Ashes 2025-26. They have won just two out of their seven matches.

Bangladesh and the West Indies are at the bottom. However, Bangladesh have just played two matches and can improve their record, but with one draw in six matches, the West Indies’ chances of qualifying for the WTC final are fading.
