The ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 final is scheduled to be played at the Lord’s in June 2025.

The Indian cricket team lost their hold at the top of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 standings following their defeat in the third test against New Zealand at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

This loss meant that India have been whitewashed for the first time in a home test series comprising three or more matches.

After an eight-wicket win in Bengaluru and a 113-run victory in Pune, Tom Latham’s side thumped the Rohit Sharma-led unit in Mumbai to pile on more misery for the hosts, who are now in a serious threat of not reaching the ICC WTC final, which is scheduled to be played at the Lord’s next June.

The Wankhede pitch was even more difficult to bat on compared to the Pune surface. The match ended in less than three days.

Batting first, New Zealand posted 235 runs on the board through fifties from Will Young and Daryl Mitchell while Ravindra Jadeja took five wickets. India took a crucial 28-run lead as Shubman Gill scored 90 and Rishabh Pant scored 60 while Ajaz Patel took a five-for.

India bowled out the Kiwis for 174 runs in their second innings with Jadeja taking a five-for again. However, in the chase of 147 runs, several Indian batsmen, including captain Rohit Sharma, played rash shots to be reduced to 29/5.

With this loss in Mumbai, India slipped to the second spot in the ICC WTC points table, going behind Australia. India have one more test series left in this cycle, against Australia in Australia. Reaching the WTC final looks a distant, perhaps an impossible dream from hereon for India, especially after their shambolic performance against New Zealand.

India have 58.33 PCT (percentage of points won) and Australia have 62.50 PCT. Australia will host India for five tests and then fly to Sri Lanka for two tests.

Follwing them are Sri Lanka with 55.56 PCT, New Zealand with 54.55 PCT and South Africa with 54.17. All three of these teams also now have a good chance of reaching the WTC final.

England, Pakistan, Bangladesh and West Indies are the bottom four teams in the ICC WTC standings.
