ICC World Test Championship 2025-27: Updated points table after 1st test, IND vs SA 2025

India suffered a disappointing loss in the first IND vs SA test, which was part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27.

South Africa beat India in first game of the two-match test series. They completed a dominating 30 runs win at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday. ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 champions looked sensational with the bat and ball and registered their first test match win in India after 15 years.

In what was a difficult pitch to bat on, South Africa won the toss and opted to bat. They had a solid start with the bat as openers in Aiden Markram (31) and Ryan Rickelton (23) looked in great touch. But after their 57-run stand, nothing went in favour of South Africa.

Wiaan Mulder (24) and Tony de Zorzi (24) had starts but couldn’t carry on as no other Proteas batter could go past the 30-run mark, barring Markram, getting all out for 159. For India, Jasprit Bumrah took a fifer, while Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav bagged two scalps each.

India also struggled with the bat, losing Yashasvi Jaiswal early in their first innings. But KL Rahul (39) and new number three Washington Sundar (29) added 57 runs for the second wicket. After that, Rishabh Pant (27) and Ravindra Jadeja (27) batted well but India lost wickets quickly.

Simon Harmer picked four wickets, while Marco Jansen took three as India got all out for 189 with a lead of 30. In the second innings, South Africa struggled yet again but their captain Temba Bavuma stepped up and slammed an unbeaten 55.

Corbin Bosch (25) supported him as South Africa took a lead of over 100 runs. Bavuma remained stranded at one end as South Africa got all out for 153, setting a target of 124 runs. For India, Jadeja took four wickets.

India lost both the openers early with the scorecard reading 1/2. Washington Sundar, who looked impressive in the first innings, played a solid hand again. He scored 31 runs and seemed to be the lone warrior as others around him struggled against spinners.

Dhruv Jurel (13) and Ravindra Jadeja (18) tried to support him but South Africa kept chipping in with wickets at regular intervals. With the team under pressure, Axar Patel (26) hit some blows to bring team back in the game. However, that wasn’t enough as India got bundled for 93 to lose the game by 30 runs.
