IND vs AFG: Watch - When Mohammed Shami's hat-trick helped India win CWC19 clash
Mohammed Shami defended 16 runs in the final over against Afghanistan in ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.
Team India will be playing their second ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 game against Afghanistan at Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi. India have got off to a great start in their campaign after defeating Australia in Chennai. Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97*) played a magnificent knock against the Aussies to give India their opening win in the mega event. India and Afghanistan have faced each other once in the World Cup tournament.
They both faced each other at Ageas Bowl cricket ground in Southampton for a memorable outing for cricket fans. Team India had a big scare against Afghanistan as they could manage to win the game by only 11 runs. Indian pacer Mohammed Shami became only the second pacer in Indian cricket to get a hat-trick in the World Cup tournament after Chetan Sharma. Shami successfully defended 16 runs in the last over and finished with a magnificent figure of 4/40.
Mohammed Shami's iconic hat-trick
Batting first, India posted just 224 runs on the board with the loss of 8 wickets. Afghanistan with a fighting spirit came closer to the target and needed 16 runs in the last over. Shami came in to bowl against half-centurion Mohammad Nabi (52) and Ikram Alikhil. Shami after conceding a boundary got Nabi out. Right in the next delivery, he castled Aftab Alam and then in the fifth ball he rattled Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s stump to win the game for India.

Mohammed Shami ended with a magnificent figure of 4/40 in his 9.5 overs. Shami was the second Indian bowler to pick up a hat-trick in the World Cup tournament. Before Shami, Chetan Sharma picked up a hat-trick against New Zealand in the 1987 World Cup. Mohammed Shami is currently not in the preferred playing XI for India despite having a stellar record in the World Cup. He has picked up 32 wickets in 11 games.
Team India posted 224 in that game with the help of former captain Virat Kohli (67) and Kedar Jadhav (52). Apart from these two Indian batters had a dismal day in Batting. India and Afghanistan have played a few magical games in limited overs format. In the Asia Cup 2018 game played in Dubai, they both played a tie. Afghanistan have lost their opening game of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 miserably against Bangladesh at HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala.
