Suryakumar Yadav suffered a thumb injury during the Buchi Babu tournament in Tamil Nadu.

The Indian cricket team’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has been given the green signal by the National Cricket Academy to return to action as he has recovered from a thumb injury. He will mark his comeback with the third round of the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2024-25 tournament.

Suryakumar hurt his thumb while fielding during the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament in Coimbatore.

He complained of some discomfort while gripping the bat and was then withdrawn from the first two rounds of the Duleep Trophy.

Suryakumar Yadav to replace Sarfaraz Khan in India B

Now, Suryakumar Yadav is set to feature in the third round of the ongoing domestic competition after being cleared by the NCA.

He will replace Sarfaraz Khan, who is with the test squad to face Bangladesh, in the India B team. The third round of matches will start on Thursday. India B will take on Shreyas Iyer’s India D at the Rural Development Trust Stadium B, Anantapur.

He will then lead India against Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series, which will be played from October 6 to 12. The three T20Is will be played in Gwalior, Delhi and Hyderabad. Then, in November, he will captain the side in a four-match T20I series in South Africa.

After the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the 34-year-old Suryakumar was named the new captain of the T20I team, following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. However, Suryakumar also continues to harbour ambitions of playing test cricket.

He has played one test match in his career so far, against Australia in Nagpur in February 2023, in which he scored only eight runs.

Suryakumar Yadav said last month, “There are a lot of people who have worked really hard to earn their place and even I want to earn that spot again I made my debut for India in Tests. After that, I got injured as well. There were a lot of people who got an opportunity and have done well too. They deserve that opportunity right now.

“Going forward, if I have to play, then I will automatically play. That’s not in my control. What’s in my power right now is to play [ongoing tournaments like Buchi Babu and Duleep] and then see what happens. But yes, I’m really looking forward to it. There are ten Test matches lined up [for India this season] and I’m obviously excited for some red-ball fun.”
