India defeated Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first IND vs BAN test in Chennai.

On the fourth day of the first test against Bangladesh, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team triumphed by 280 runs to take a 1-0 series lead. The victory strengthened the Gautam Gambhir-coached team’s confidence, and the Indian team’s unprecedented achievement added to the event’s significance.

India were asked to bat first in the first test in Chennai, and they were down to 144/6 at one point. However, Ravi Ashwin (113) and Ravindra Jadeja (86) scored 199 runs for the seventh wicket, lifting India to a fighting 376 runs. Hasan Mahmud became the first Bangladeshi bowler to capture a five-wicket haul in India in test cricket.

In reply, Bangladesh were routed for 149 runs thanks to Jasprit Bumrah’s 4/50 and two wickets each from Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Building on a massive 227-run lead, the Indian side scored 287/4d thanks to Shubman Gill (119*) and Rishabh Pant (109), who combined for 167 runs.

Bangladesh attempted to challenge the aim of 515 runs to win. Shadman Islam (35) and Zakir Hasan (33) scored 62 runs for the first wicket in quick succession. Shanto then hit an outstanding 82 runs, but Bangladesh were bowled out for 234 runs, losing the match by 280 runs.

Ravi Ashwin was the star with 6/88, while Ravindra Jadeja picked three wickets as well. Ashwin was named Player of the Match for his brilliant all-round performance.

“It was a great result”- Rohit Sharma after India’s win over Bangladesh in 1st Test

India captain Rohit Sharma was ecstatic to begin their stretch of home tests with such a thumping win. The current victory helped India maintain their lead in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 standings, with 71.67 PCT and 86 points from ten matches.

“It was a great result looking at what lies ahead for us. We are playing after a long time, but you are never out of cricket. We came here a week before, we had a good lead-up to the Test match and we got the result that we wanted,” Rohit said in a post-match presentation as per Cricbuzz.

“He’s been through some really tough times. The way he has managed himself through those tough times was superb to watch. He came back in the IPL, followed by a very successful World Cup and this is the format he loves the most. For us, it was never about what is he going to do with the bat, we always knew what he had with the bat and with the gloves as well. It was just about giving him the game time. Credit to him as well, he went on to play Duleep Trophy and got ready for this Test match and had an impact straightaway in the game,” Rohit said about Rishabh Pant’s knock.

Rohit Sharma also praised Ravi Ashwin for his brilliant performance as the spinner scored 113 runs, his sixth test hundred, and took 6/88, his 37th Test five-wicket haul, to be named Player of the Match.

Rohit stated: “He’s next in line to talk to you, he’s the right man to answer what he does. Every time we look up to him, he’s always there for us whether with the bat or ball. I don’t know if I speak here, it’ll be enough of what he does for this team. Every time we see him come out and do the job, it’s always so brilliant. He’s never out of the game. The last competitive cricket he played was IPL and then he had some fun playing TNPL. We watched him bat up the order and that’s what helped him as well to bat the way he did.”

“Bowlers did a great job, I hope the batters will do something special”- Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto praised his bowlers for their wonderful performance as Hasan Mahmud picked a fifer in the first innings, while Tasking Ahmed picked a total of four wickets in the match.

He only wished that the batters could do something special when the two teams meet in the second test in Kanpur from September 27.

“The positive thing is the way Hasan, Taskin, and Rana bowled in the first 2-3 hours, really impressive. After that, they (India) batted really well. Seaming option – everyone contributed. The way we bowled with the new ball, it’s impressive. In the last couple of series, we have bowled really well but we have to continue that. As a batter, I always try to contribute. I enjoy my batting. Just try to bat as long as we can without thinking about the outcome, just try to follow our process and play with our strength that’s what we wanted to do. Bowlers did a great job, I hope the batters will do something special,” Shanto said.

“Definition a lot special”- Rishabh Pant on his brilliant century in the second innings

Rishabh Pant, who made his return to test cricket after 634 days away due to a car accident, said that it was emotional and special about his brilliant century in the second innings of the first test in Chennai.

Pant smacked 13 fours and four sixes in his knock of 109 balls and added 167 runs with Shubman Gill for the 4th wicket.

“Definition a lot special, firstly I love playing in Chennai and secondly after injury, I was looking to play all three formats, this was my first match in this format and hopefully I did better. Definitely, it was emotional, I was looking to score runs in every game. Coming back to Test cricket where I belong the most, being on the field gives me pleasure more than anything else. I don’t know what people say outside, I tried to read the situation in my own way, when you are 30-3 you need to stitch a partnership and that’s what I did with Gill. To do it with a guy who I have a great relationship with is special,” Rishabh Pant said.

I am enjoying my game: Ravi Ashwin after his Player of the Match performance

Ravi Ashwin was the Player of the Match for his fighting 113 in the first innings, where he added 199 runs for the seventh wicket to help India post 376 runs from 144/6. He then picked 6/88 in the last innings to help India win by 280 runs after going wicketless in the first innings.

“Every time I play in Chennai in front of this crowd, it’s an amazing feeling for me. I have watched a lot of Test cricket and international cricket sitting in those stands. To play in front of those stands, it’s a beautifully renovated stadium now, that itself is a special feeling for me. I am probably enjoying my game because of what I am doing and not because of what I want to get out of it. It was an opportunity to fight and dig in deep, that’s one of the reasons why we all play the game. I have seen so many of my teammates do that in the past.

I just kept it really simple, have to thank Jadeja for what he did, he just took me through the tough phases of the innings. Quite a special knock on the first day didn’t sink in until day two. Glad I ended up with a few wickets today as well. I make a living by bowling, so bowling comes first all the time. I think like a bowler mostly but I have made a conscious effort to think like a batter when I walk out with a bat in my hand. Batting is something that comes naturally but yet I have struggled sometimes with my thoughts getting ahead of myself. I have tried to manage it. Over the last few years, I have managed to compartmentalize both, but it is a work in process,” Ashwin said.

The second and final Test is to begin on September 27 in Kanpur.
