Ravi Ashwin took a 5-wicket haul in the second innings of the fourth IND vs ENG test in Ranchi.

In the fourth test match between India and England at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, the crowd witnessed a stellar performance by Indian bowlers in England’s second innings. Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav spun a web as the visitors lost five wickets early in the second session of the ongoing fourth test. Both spinners shared nine wickets among themselves, which helped the hosts rattle the visitors for 145 runs in the second innings.

The veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin not only played a crucial role in second innings by picking a five-wicket haul, but also etched his name in the record books with several noteworthy achievements. Let’s take a look at all the records achieved by Ravi Ashwin in the Ranchi test.

List of records achieved by Ravichandran Ashwin in 4th test vs England

1) First Indian bowler to take 100 wickets against England in tests

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the first Indian bowler to pick 100 or more wickets against England in test cricket. Before start of the series, former Indian spinner Bhagwath Chandrasekhar (95 wickets) held the record of taking most wickets against England in tests amongst Indian bowlers.

2) First Indian to achieve the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets against same opponents in tests

Veteran all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin became the first Indian to achieve the double of taking 100 wickets as well as score 1000 runs against a single team in the longest format of the game. Ravichandran Ashwin had completed 1000 test runs against England during the second test in Vishakapatnam, while in this ongoing test in Ranchi, he completed 100 wickets to achieve a rare double.

3. Broke Anil Kumble’s record for most test wickets in India

Before start of the Ranchi test, Ravi Ashwin had 348 wickets to his name at home, two behind Anil Kumble in the list of Indian bowlers with most test wickets at home conditions. Ravi Ashwin picked one wicket in the first innings and scalped five more in the second innings to surpass former Indian captain Anil Kumble.

Ashwin now has 354 wickets to his name in Indian conditions, which is most by an Indian bowler at home followed by Anil Kumble (350), Harbhajan Singh (265).

4) Equaled Anil Kumble’s record of most 5-wicket hauls in tests by an Indian bowler

In the ongoing fourth test against England in Ranchi, Ravi Ashwin managed to pick only one wicket in the first innings, but he bounced back nicely in the second innings and picked his first 5-wicket haul of the series.

Overall, this is Ashwin’s 35th 5-wicket haul in test cricket, which is joint-most by an Indian bowler in the longest format of the game. Anil Kumble had taken 35 5-wicket hauls in his test career of 132 games.
