IND vs ENG: Arshdeep Singh overtakes Yuzvendra Chahal to become India's highest wicket taker in T20I cricket

The first T20I of England’s tour of India 2025 at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, got underway after India captain Suryakumar Yadav won the toss and chose to bowl, citing the due factor as a key reason for the decision.
The biggest surprise for Indian fans came when Mohammed Shami was not included in India’s playing XI, despite being named in the squad for the first time in over a year.
Both teams have chosen contrasting playing XIs for the game. The hosts have opted for three spinners, while England have shown confidence in their pacers by picking four fast bowlers.

Arshdeep Singh gave India a great start by dismissing both England openers, Phil Salt and Ben Duckett, within the first three overs. He bowled an outswinging short ball to have Salt caught behind in the first over. Then Duckett was caught by Rinku Singh on the off-side.
The left-arm pacer who made his debut in July 2022 has now overtaken Yuzvendra Chahal to become India’s highest wicket-taker in T20I cricket, sitting currently at 97 wickets in 61 matches.
Arshdeep played a key role in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory, finishing as the tournament’s joint-highest wicket-taker.
Arshdeep has now taken 97 wickets in T20Is at an average of 17.83 and an economy rate of 8.25, surpassing Chahal’s tally of 96 wickets at an average of 25.

- Jasprit Bumrah – 89 wickets

At the time of writing, England have made a strong recovery and are 61/2 after seven overs. Jos Buttler (42) and Harry Brook (21) are at the crease.
