Before getting stumped, Ollie Pope scored 11 runs in the first innings against India in the fifth test.

In a fascinating turn of events on day one of the fifth test between India and England, young wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel’s prediction about Ollie Pope’s dismissal proved accurate.

With England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett weathering the initial storm by Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj, Ollie Pope walked out to the crease looking slightly scratchy. However, Jurel, known for his sharp mind behind the stumps, seemed to have a premonition.

England’s No. 3 Pope was having trouble facing Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav on a turning surface at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium.

The duo of Ashwin and Kuldeep kept up the pressure on Pope, who finally lost his patience and his wicket right at the stroke of lunch.

Before Pope’s dismissal, Indian wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel was heard on the stump mic during the 26th over, where he was warning Kuldeep about the batter’s intention to use his feet again. But, the decision to use his feet on the very next ball to counter the spin backfired, as Pope looked to play against the turn to what he thought was the conventional leg spin from Kuldeep.

“Badhega ye aage, badhega aage (He will step out)..!!” Jurel warned Kuldeep and Pope did exactly what the stumper said.

The very next ball, a well-disguised googly from Yadav, deceived Pope completely. The batter, attempting to play for the leg break, ended up completely misjudging the delivery and was stumped by a sharp Jurel. Pope departed for a mere 11 runs, leaving England in a spot of bother just before lunch.

At the time of writing, Zak Crawley had smashed 79 runs to keep India at bay, but Kuldeep Yadav picked four wickets as England reached 175/4 in 44 overs.
