Jacob Bethell sustained a left hamstring injury during the first ODI.

Less than two weeks out from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, England have been handed a huge blow as talented youngster Jacob Bethell is down with a hamstring injury. The extent of the injury is not yet known and it will be assessed on Monday.

Bethell featured in the first ODI against India in Nagpur, where he scored a gritty half-century, managing 51 runs off 64 balls with three fours and a six, which took England to a respectable total of 248 runs. But it wasn’t enough as India gunned down the target with more than 10 overs to spare.

On Sunday, Bethell missed the second ODI in Cuttack.

The ECB later confirmed that Bethell has a has sustained a left hamstring injury. England have added Somerset batter Tom Banton as cover for Bethell for the third ODI, which will be played in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

Banton made his T20I debut in 2019 and ODI debut in 2020. He’s featured in six ODIs so far, scoring 134 runs at an average of 26 and strike rate of 92 with one half-century.

He was in good form during the ILT20 2025 season. He scored 493 runs from 11 innings at an average of 54.77, including two centuries. The ECB confirmed that he will join the England squad in Ahmedabad ahead of the third ODI.

Meanwhile, apart from Bethell, England also rested Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse from their side in the second ODI. Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton made into the XI in Cuttack.
