A total of five Indian youngsters made their debuts in the ongoing IND vs ENG Anthony De Mello Trophy.

The Anthony De Mello Trophy against England provided a golden opportunity for India in test cricket. The Indian team management trusted the youngsters in the absence of a few senior players from the squad. Virat Kohli skipped the entire series due to personal reasons. KL Rahul was ruled out after the first test due to a quadriceps injury.

KS Bharat was dropped after the second test due to poor performance. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj were rotated to manage their workload. All these things combined, allowed the Indian team to look for young players in the ongoing five-match test series. A total of five players made their debuts for India in this series. Let’s have a look at the list of players who have made their test debuts in the ongoing India-England series.

1 . Tom Hartley

England unleashed unknown left-arm spinner Tom Hartley against India in the first test played at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.

The risk paid off when England won the first game by 28 runs. Hartley picked up nine wickets in his debut test match and rattled the Indian batting lineup.

2 . Rajat Patidar

The 30-year-old Madhya Pradesh batter Rajat Patidar was the first Indian name to make his debut in the ongoing five-match test series.

Patidar made his debut at ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam and played three matches in the series. He scored 63 runs in six innings.

3. Shoaib Bashir (England)

Just like Tom Hartley, the English team management gave young off-spinner Shoaib Bashir an opportunity in the Visakhapatnam test. Bashir had a decent start to his career and picked up four wickets in the game.

He then went on to pick up eight wickets in the Ranchi test. Bashir played only six first-class games before making his test debut for the English side.

4. Sarfaraz Khan

This was one of the most awaited debuts in Indian cricket. Sarfaraz Khan was sidelined for long even after scoring bulk runs in Indian domestic cricket.

The star Mumbai batter finally got his chance at Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot when KL Rahul was ruled out of action. Sarfaraz had an impactful debut for India and scored 130 runs in his first test match.

5. Dhruv Jurel

He played two crucial knocks at JSCA Stadium in Ranchi in the fourth test match. Jurel scored 90 in the first innings of the Ranchi test and then scored 39* to win the test.

The Indian team management decided to rest Jasprit Bumrah in Ranchi which allowed right-arm pacer Akash Deep to earn his first test cap. Akash Deep became India’s 313th test player.

The 27-year-old pacer had a brilliant debut in Ranchi and went on to pick up three wickets in the first innings. The bowler has played 31 first-class games and picked up 107 wickets.

7. Devdutt Padikkal

Left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal was India’s debutant at HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala. Padikkal was India’s 314th player in test cricket. KL Rahul and Rajat Patidar’s injuries allowed him an opportunity in the Indian playing XI.

Padikkal was not even in contention for the test side just a few months ago, but after a prolific Ranji Trophy and India A series he earned his test cap.
