Find out why India-England test series has two different names as Anthony de Mello Trophy and Pataudi Trophy.

India and England’s test rivalry has a bit of history attached. India played their first ever test match against England in 1932 and since then, both sides have been part of a great test cricket spectacle. India and England have been two of the most dominant test teams in the world in the last few years. England are currently in India competing for Anthony de Mello trophy in a five-match test series.

England under Ben Stokes’ leadership began the series with a win against India at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad while India bounced back nicely and defeated England comprehensively in the second, third and fourth tests played in Vishakapatnam, Rajkot and Ranchi, respectively.

What is the difference between Anthony de Mello Trophy and Pataudi Trophy?

While India and England engage in bilateral test series, people have often heard two different names of the trophies they fight for. Namely, “Pataudi Trophy,” and “Anthony de Mello Trophy.” Have you ever wondered why there are two different names for bilateral test series between two countries? We got you covered.

“Anthony de Mello Trophy” is awarded to the winners of bilateral test series between India and England played in India, while “Pataudi Trophy” is awarded to winners of the bilateral test series between England and India played in England. The first ever Anthony de Mello Trophy was played in 1951/52, where both teams played out a 1-1 draw in the five-match test series.

Anthony de Mello was a former Indian cricket administrator and one of the founding members of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The test series between India and England played in India was named after him.

In 2007, when India toured England for a three-match test series, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) instituted the Pataudi Trophy to mark 75th anniversary of first ever England vs India test series that took place in 1932. “Pataudi Trophy” has been named after the Pataudi family.

Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, also known as Nawab of Pataudi, represented both England and India in test cricket. His son, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, also known as Tiger Pataudi, represented India 46 tests.

In 2012, the Pataudi family requested to make the Pataudi Trophy as the winner’s prize in both test series which get played either in India and England, but BCCI denied their request and said it wouldn’t rename the Anthony de Mello Trophy which is awarded for test series between India and England in India.

The fifth test of the ongoing Anthony de Mello Trophy will be played in Dharamsala from 7th March, 2024. It will be just a formality before India lift the trophy as the hosts already lead the series 3-1 with one match to go.
