Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel are making their India debut in the ongoing third IND vs ENG test in Rajkot.

Two Indian youngsters got the opportunity to represent India in test cricket for the first time in the ongoing Rajkot test against England. Injury hit India have shown big trust in youngsters for the five-match test series against England. Rajat Patidar made his debut in the Visakhapatnam test replacing KL Rahul in the playing XI, while in the third test at Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, Sarfaraz Khan and wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel earned their maiden test caps.

Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel have replaced Shreyas Iyer and KS Bharat respectively in the playing XI. KL Rahul was not fully fit for the Rajkot test and he was ruled out due to injury. KS Bharat was dropped due to constant poor show with the bat. Sarfaraz Khan has been a prolific run-scorer in the Indian domestic cricket from seasons and fans were constantly in support of Sarfaraz’s place in the playing XI.

How caps are given on debut?

Before start of the third test in Rajkot, India had 310 cricketers, who had represented the nation in test cricket. But before the start of the Rajkot test, two fresh faces, namely, Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel were handed maiden test caps. When a player makes his debut in international cricket, he is presented with a cap carrying serial number on it.

For example, Rajat Patidar was handed test cap number 310 in the second test in Vishakapatnam as he became 310th cricketer to represent India in tests. But in the ongoing third test in Rajkot, two Indian players were handed their maiden caps with serial numbers 311 and 312. So who is the 311th cricketer and who is the 312th cricketer to represent India in tests?

Well, when two players make debut in the same game, player slotted higher in the batting order receives the first cap, while player slotted lower in the batting order receives the next. In this case, Sarfaraz Khan has been slotted to bat at No. 6 for India in the ongoing test, so he has become 311th cricketer to represent India in tests, while Dhruv Jurel, who is slotted to bat at No. 7, has been handed cap number 312.

Late Amar Singh was awarded cap number 1 in 1932 when India made their test debut. Amar Singh was handed cap No. 1 as all of the players were making their debut and the caps were given in alphabetical order. Late Nirode Ranjan Chowdhury received India’s 50th test cap. Late Baloo Gupte received test cap number 100 in 1961. Nayan Mongia was 200th test cricketer to represent India, while T Natarajan received the 300th test cap for India in 2021.

Late Amar Singh was awarded the first ever test cap from India. Amar Singh’s name came first in alphabetical order in the first ever test squad thus he was given the first ever test cap. Late Nirode Ranjan Chowdhury was India’s cap number 50 in test cricket. Late Baloo Gupte was cap number 100 for India in test cricket. Nayan Mongia was 200th and T. Natarajan was 300th Capped player for India.
