England’s Zak Crawley became Ravi Ashwin’s 500th test victim.

Ravi Ashwin finally achieved the feat of taking 500 test wickets in the ongoing third test between India and England. This match is being played at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot and Ashwin achieved the milestone on day 2 of the match on February 16, 2024.

Ravi Ashwin’s 500th wicket came at a good time for India, as England’s openers reacted to India’s 445 in the first innings with an 89-run stand in only 13 overs.

Ashwin, who debuted for India in November 2011, has been instrumental in the team’s decade-long domination at home. He has picked 34 five-wicket hauls and eight match hauls of ten or more. Only Anil Kumble, with 619 wickets, leads Ashwin among Indian wicket-takers in test cricket.

He is only the third off-spinner to reach the record, behind Muthiah Muralitharan and Nathan Lyon.

Zak Crawley becomes Ravi Ashwin’s 500th Test wicket

Ashwin needed one wicket to achieve 500 before the start of the third test, and he did so in England’s first innings, dismissing Zak Crawley for 15 runs. Zak Crawley was attempting a sweep from the outside leg when he slid to the top edge. Rajat Patidar took a simple catch at square leg running backwards.

Ashwin’s colleagues gathered to congratulate him, making him only the second Indian to accomplish this famous milestone. It’s undeniably a time for celebration, but there’s also an acknowledgment that there’s still work to be done in the greater context of the game.

Here is the video:

Ashwin became the second-fastest bowler to reach the landmark, both in terms of matches and balls bowled. Overall, Ashwin has taken 25715 balls, next only to the legendary Glenn McGrath who required 25528. The 37-year-old is also the second fastest to take 500 wickets in the history of test cricket in terms of matches taken. Ashwin took 98 matches to complete 500 test wickets, while Muttiah Muralitharan achieved the same in 87 tests.
