Rohit and Gill scored 103 and 110 runs respectively in the first innings of the Dharamshala test.

The ongoing India vs England fifth test match took a dramatic turn on day two after the lunch break, as the English bowling duo of Ben Stokes and James Anderson provided much-needed break throughs to the visitors at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala.

Resuming on 135/1, Indian batters Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill hammered their respective centuries and put the hosts in command as they reached 264/1 at lunch on day two. Sharma notched up his 12th test century by punishing the likes of Mark Wood, James Anderson and Shoaib Bashir all over the park, while Gill reached his fourth test ton.

As the English side looked lost for options at the end of the first session, the veteran all-rounder Stokes bought himself into the attack. Stokes, who had been playing as a pure batter throughout the five-match test series against India due to his knee surgery, came on to bowl for the first time.

The Three Lions skipper was rewarded right away. Stokes bowled a brilliant outswinger to Indian opener Rohit Sharma and uprooted his off stump.

James Anderson rips through Shubman Gill’s defense

After Ben Stokes got the hosts their first breakthrough of the day with a stunning delivery to castle Rohit Sharma for 103, the 41-year-old Anderson also joined the party with another dismissal. Rohit and Gill had earlier racked up a 171-run stand to put India in the driver’s seat.

Bowling the second ball of the 63rd over to Gill, who was batting on 110, was undone by the seam movement, allowing the ball to breach the gap between his bat and pad to rip out the off stump. Gill was Anderson’s 699th test wicket. Interestingly, Anderson has dismissed Gill more times than anyone else in test cricket. The legendary pacer has dismissed the young Indian batter six times in 12 innings.

At the time of writing, Sarfaraz Khan and debutant Devdutt Padikkal were at the crease. India were 376/3 leading England by 158 runs at tea.
