Why India have been penalised five runs in Rajkot test?
During 102nd over of the Indian innings, on-field umpire Joel Wilson signalled for five penalty runs after Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin was caught running on protected area of the pitch on first session of second day. Umpire Joel Wilson pulled up Ashwin, who was unhappy with the umpire’s decision to penalise runs. Later after their conversation, umpire Joel Wilson penalised India five runs.
Even on first day, Ravindra Jadeja was spotted a couple of times running on the protected area of the pitch and received first and final warning from the umpires. With Ashwin doing it again in the Indian innings, umpires had to take action according to the laws.
Running on the pitch is considered a level 1 offence. Bowlers also get a warning when they attempt to land middle of pitch while bowling. At the end of lunch on day two, India were at 388/7 with Ashwin and Dhruv Jurel still at the wicket. Dhruv Jurel has played a decent knock so far.
