Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 37 runs in the second innings of the fourth test match against England in Ranchi.

In a sensational display of batting, Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal etched his name in the record books by equaling Indian veteran batter Virat Kohli’s historic record for the most runs scored by an Indian batter in a test series against England.

Jaiswal’s gritty knock on day 4 of the fourth test match in Ranchi saw him reaching 655 runs in the ongoing series, which equaled Kohli’s previous record of 655 runs, set in the 2016 home series.

In the ongoing five-match series against Ben Stokes-led England, Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has smashed 655* runs till now in four matches. Jaiswal has hammered two double hundreds and two fifties in eight innings so far at a stunning average of 93.57.

During England’s tour of India in 2016/17, Indian batter Virat Kohli showed his class against the English side. During the five-match series against the Three Lions, former Indian skipper Virat Kohli amassed 655 runs including two centuries and two half-centuries with a highest score of 235.

Kohli’s outstanding performance helped India win the five-match series 4-0. During that famous series, Kohli averaged 109.16 in eight innings.

During his 73-run knock in the first innings of the Ranchi test, young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal joined former Indian captain and current coach Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli to become third Indian to score more than 600 runs in a bilateral test series.

Legendary batter Rahul Dravid hammered 602 runs during the 2002 tour of England. During that famous test series, Dravid played a match-saving innings of 115 at Nottingham, a match-winning innings of 148 at Headingly, and once again frustrated England with a 217 at the Oval.

Most runs by an Indian batsman in a test series against England:

1. Yashasvi Jaiswal – 655* runs, 2024

2. Virat Kohli – 655 runs, 2016

3. Rahul Dravid – 602 runs, 2002

4. V Kohli – 593 runs, 2018

5. Vijay Manjrekar – 586 runs, 1961/62

The 22-year-old Jaiswal is just one run away from passing Kohli’s historic record for most runs in a test series against England. In the second innings of the Ranchi test, Jaiswal was batting on 37 runs when he attempted a big shot off off-spinner Joe Root’s delivery, but he sliced towards the backward point where James Anderson took a stunning diving catch.
