Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 214 not out off 236 deliveries including 14 fours and 12 sixes in his innings.
Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has had a phenomenal run in the ongoing five-match test series against England in 2024 so far. At 22, aggressive batter Yashasvi Jaiswal is breaking records for fun. In the third test match, Jaiswal hammered his second test double ton on day 4 against England at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on Sunday, February 18.
During his memorable knock, Jaiswal also smashed three consecutive sixes against England’s veteran fast bowler James Anderson. Despite getting out for 10 runs in the first innings of the Rajkot test, Yashasvi Jaiswal answered his critics and chipped in with another crucial knock. However, the main highlight of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s double hundred in the third test was his ability to adapt to the situation and choose the right time to attack English bowlers.
Here are the records achieved by Yashasvi Jaiswal in the 3rd test against England
1. Third Indian batter to hit double hundreds in consecutive tests:
In the third test match against England at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, 22-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal became the third Indian batter after Vinod Kambli and modern-day Chase Master Virat Kohli to hit two double centuries in successive test matches for India.
Jaiswal during his stay hammered 214* off 236 balls, including 14 fours and 12 huge sixes, with a strike rate of 90.68.
In February 1993, Vinod Kambli scored 224 in Mumbai against England. In March 1993, Kambli scored 227 in Delhi, which was his next test innings, and it came against Zimbabwe. Whereas, Indian veteran batter Virat Kohli scored two consecutive double hundreds during the 2017 test series against Sri Lanka.
2. Most sixes by an Indian batter in an innings in a test match:
During his record breaking innings in the third test match against England, Jaiswal went past the record of eight sixes and became the batter with most sixes in an innings in test cricket for India.
The historic record was previously held jointly by Indian opener Mayank Agarwal and former Indian player Navjot Singh Sidhu. Jaiswal, who smashed 12 sixes during his stay, achieved this feat after smashing England’s premium fast pacer James Anderson during day 4 of the third test match at Rajkot on February 18.
3. Join-most sixes by a batter in an innings in test cricket:
During his memorable knock of 214* off 236 balls, including 14 fours and 12 huge sixes, with a strike rate of 90.68 against England in the third test match against England in Rajkot, Jaiswal equaled the record for most sixes by any batter in an innings in test cricket. The record is jointly held by Jaiswal and legendary Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram, who smashed 12 huge maximums against Zimbabwe in 1996.
4. First Indian to smash two double hundreds against England in a test series:
The young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has also become the first Indian to smash two double centuries in a test series against England.
In the five-match series between India and England, Jaiswal played a match-winning knock in the first innings of the second test match, where India won the match and leveled the series 1-1. During the Visakhapatnam test, the left-handed batter smashed 209 runs and helped his side to a 106-run win over the Ben Stokes-led English side.
In the third test match against the English side, Jaiswal once again hammered a double ton and achieved the historic landmark of being the first Indian to smash two double centuries in a test series against the Three Lions.
In the second innings of the Rajkot test match, Jaiswal amassed 214* off 236 balls, including 14 fours and 12 huge sixes, with a strike rate of 90.68.
5. Third Indian batter to hit two double hundreds in a test series:
During his iconic knock of 214* off 236 balls, including 14 fours and 12 huge sixes, with a strike rate of 90.68 against England in the third test match, Indian aggressive batter Yashasvi Jaiswal joined the elite list of Indian batters to record two double centuries in a test series.
The other two Indians who are included in this rare list are Vinoo Mankad (vs. New Zealand, 1955–56) and Virat Kohli (vs. Sri Lanka, 2017–18).
6. Most sixes by a Indian batter in a test series:
Yashasvi Jaiswal created a new record for hitting most sixes for India in a test series by taking his tally of maximums to 20* against the English side in the five-match series.
The 22-year-old opening batter achieved this iconic milestone during second innings of the third test at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. Jaiswal shattered the record of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who smashed 19 huge sixes for his side to achieve this rare feat against South Africa in 2019.
7. Second batter to hit James Anderson for three sixes in an over in test cricket:
Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal became only the second batter to smash James Anderson for three sixes in an over in test cricket. Jaiswal achieved this huge feat in the third test match between India and England at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot.
The other batter who hammered the veteran English paceman for three consecutive sixes is former Australian player George Bailey, who smashed a hat trick of maximums at Perth in 2013, where Anderson also conceded his most expensive over (28 runs) in test cricket.
