India won the toss and opted to field first in the 2nd ODI against New Zealand.
After winning the first clash, Indian Cricket Team clashed with New Zealand Cricket Team in the second T20I on January 23 (Friday). The IND vs NZ 2nd T20I took place at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur.
The luck favoured India at the start as they won the toss with captain Suryakumar Yadav opted to field first. He also revealed that India made two changes to their playing XI. While all-rounder Axar Patel was ruled out of the match due to a finger injury, pacer Jasprit Bumrah was rested. The Men-in-Blue added pacer Harshit Rana and Kuldeep Yadav as replacements.
On the other hand, New Zealand made three changes for the encounter. Tim Seifert, Zakary Foulkes, and Matt Henry were added to the playing XI in place of Tim Robinson, Kyle Jamieson, and Kristian Clarke were not part of the clash.
With a 43-run opening stand, Devon Conway (19) and Tim Siefert (24) gave a quick start to the Kiwis’, but lost their wickets in the powerplay overs. Rachin Ravindra added 44 runs but crucial batsmen like Glenn Phillips (19), Daryl Mitchell (18), and Mark Chapman (10) failed to go big.
At one stage, they were struggling at 129/5 on the scoreboard, but with his unbeaten 47 runs, Mitchell Santner rescued the team’s batting and propelled the scoreboard to 208/6. Kudeep Yadav was the top wicket-taker for India with his two wickets, while four other bowlers got one scalp each.
India lost their openers Sanju Samson (6) and Abhishek Sharma (0) early. However, Ishan Kishan came up with a sensational batting effort, smacking half-century in just 21 balls. With the help of 11 fours and four sixes, he scored 76 runs off 32 deliveries.
Captain Suryakumar (82*) scored his much-awaited half-century off 23 deliveries. Crossing the 150 mark at the end of the 11th over, India dominated the chase from the start. Shivam Dube (36*) also played his part as India won by seven wickets, reaching the target in just 15.2 overs.

- New Zealand (208/6) registered their highest-ever total against India in T20I cricket, surpassing their previous record of 196/2 in Rajkot in 2017.
- Arshdeep Singh (18) registered the unwanted record of joint-most runs conceded by an Indian bowler in the first over in T20Is. He shares the record with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who also leaked 18 runs in a clash against Ireland in 2022.
- Ishan Kishan (22 balls) scripted the record for the fastest half-century against New Zealand in T20Is. He broke Abhishek Sharma’s (21 balls), which he registered in the previous game.
- India chased down their joint-highest target in T20Is, equalling the previous record of 209 against Australia in 2023.
- India successfully chased down a 200+ target for the sixth time. They follow Australia (7) for the feat.
- Suryakumar Yadav (8 times) equalled Abhishek Sharma’s record for reaching 50+ scores in 25 or fewer deliveries in T20Is the most times. (Since October 2024)
- India (75/2) registered second highest powerplay total against New Zealand in T20Is, behind 76/1 in ICC T20 World Cup 2007.
- India registered fastest 200+ run chase in T20I history.
