India are 2-0 behind in the three-match IND vs NZ series 2024.

The Indian cricket team, known for their impeccable home record, find themselves in an unfamiliar territory, trailing 2-0 in a three-match test series against New Zealand.

Not much has gone right for the hosts so far in the first two IND vs NZ tests. Before the IND vs NZ series, the Asian giants were expected to sweep the Kiwis, which would have eased their path to the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

India won the toss and elected to bat first in the first game of the series. The moist Bengaluru pitch, though, assisted the Kiwi fast bowlers and triggered a dramatic Indian batting collapse.

The horror Indian batting show saw them falter out for their lowest-ever test score of 46 in the first innings. New Zealand, on the back of their strong batting performance, won the first test comfortably by eight wickets.

The second test in Pune continued India’s woes, as they lost by 113 runs. Left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner rattled the Indian team, picking up 13 wickets across both innings. Santner also contributed with the bat, making 37 in the game.

As the teams head to Mumbai for the third and last test of the IND vs NZ series, starting from November 1st, India face the risk of losing all the matches in a home test series, a rare of the rarest events.

When was the last time India lost all matches in a test series at home?

The 1999/2000 series between India and South Africa marked the only time India lost all matches of a home test series, excluding one-off tests. South Africa hammered India 2-0 in the two-test series in 1999/2000.

In the first test in Mumbai, India struggled on a spin-friendly track, getting bundled out for 225 in the first innings. A strong bowling performance led by Indian spinners helped the hosts bowl out South Africa for the score of 176, taking a valuable lead of 49 runs in the first innings.

The Indian batting, unfortunately, could not back the efforts of the bowling attack, scoring just 113 runs in their second innings to set a target of 163 for the Proteas. South Africa chased down the target with four wickets in hand to lead the series 1-0.

The second test in Bengaluru further exposed India’s batting vulnerabilities. Bowling out India for a small score of 158 runs in the first innings, South Africa capitalized with a strong reply, putting up 479 runs in their first innings.

Facing a massive deficit, India fell short once again, getting all-out for 250 in their second innings, handing South Africa a thumping win by an innings and 71 runs.

India have never been white-washed in a home test series of three or more tests. So, New Zealand, who registered their maiden test series win in India, can further consign Rohit Sharma’s side to more embarrassment if they win the third IND vs NZ test in Mumbai.
