IND vs NZ Final Prediction: Which team is favourite to lift T20 World Cup 2026 title?

India eye back-to-back T20 World Cup titles at home while New Zealand chase a long-awaited ICC trophy in a high-stakes IND vs NZ final.

The final match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 will be played between India and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8. Both teams have had an interesting ride in the tournament up to this point, with both also facing a scare of elimination.

However, both teams turned their campaigns around to qualify for the final of ICC T20 World Cup 2026. With one match left, the defending champions India will look to defend the title at home, while New Zealand will look to add an ICC Trophy to their cabinet.

Having faced each other in the semifinal of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, India and New Zealand have frequently clashed in the knockout phase in recent times. So when the teams take the field on Sunday, it will be a somewhat familiar experience for the finalists.

India’s journey to final

Indian Cricket Team in T20 World Cup 2026,

Looking at the campaign for India, the Men in Blue cruised through the group stages with a 100% record, which included a big win against arch-rivals Pakistan. But the Super 8s was a different story for the defending champions. They suffered a heavy defeat against South Africa, putting their defence in a critical situation.

Wins against Zimbabwe and West Indies along with South Africa beating West Indies helped India to book their semifinal spot. India secured their spot in the grand finale after a thrilling victory over England in a high-scoring semi-final.

Speaking of the players, every time a new player in the blue jersey has put his hands up in the need of an hour. Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Jasprit Bumrah have performed at crucial moments in matches to take their side home, single-handedly. This is what every team dreams of going into a big tournament.

But the problem lies with the likes of Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakravarthy, who have been unable to perform. Abhisek Sharma- No.1 ranked T20I batter – started his World Cup campaign with three ducks. On the other hand, Varun Chakravarthy- No.1 ranked T20I bowler started his campaign in a good position but has struggled since the Super 8s.

In the New Zealand side of things, they too, cruised through the group stage with 3 wins. In the Super 8, the washed out match against Pakistan meant matches against Sri Lanka and England were crucial. The Kiwis won big against Sri Lanka and although fell short against England. However, other results went in their favour and they qualified for the semis. The semifinal saw New Zealand pull off a remarkable win against a strong South African side.

The opening partnership of Tim Seifert and Finn Allen have been the biggest positives for the Kiwis. Rachin Ravindra has shown his qualities in spinning conditions. Pacers Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson have also adapted brilliantly to the sub-continent conditions. Similar to India, almost every Kiwi player has performed well together.

The middle order though has been the biggest worry for New Zealand. The performance of Seifert and Allen has covered the Kiwis until now but in big match like the final, the batting order has to collectively click. In the bowling, front line spinner Ish Sodhi has not performed according to the expectations. Ravindra has surprisingly played the role of lead spinner.
