Ravi Ashwin took a stunning catch of Daryl Mitchell in the third IND vs NZ test in Mumbai.

Day one of the final test between India and New Zealand ended in a dramatic fashion with the Indian team losing three quick wickets to slip from 78/1 to 84/4 in the last 10 minutes of the day. The second day of the third IND vs NZ test in Mumbai started with India in a state of bother at 84/4.

Then, the hosts staged a comeback in the first session of the day’s play. Overnight batting duo of Shubman Gill (90) and Rishabh Pant (60) added 96 runs for the fifth wicket to steer India to a 28-run lead.

The star of the show for the Kiwis was left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel, who registered his sixth five-wicket haul in test cricket.

Trailing by 28 runs in the first innings, New Zealand’s second innings started on a poor note with captain Tom Latham getting bowled through the gate on the score of just one run.

The most important wicket for India came in the 28th over with Ravindra Jadeja dismissing his CSK teammate Daryl Mitchell for 21 runs.

The dangerous looking Mitchell fell to a clever piece of bowling from Jadeja, who spotted his intent to step out and launch a big hit over mid-on. Anticipating Mitchell’s footwork, Jadeja pulled his length back just enough to deceive the Kiwi batsman, luring him into a mistimed shot. The highlight of this wicket was Ravi Ashwin, who pulled off a blinder running backwards.

Meanwhile, at the time of writing, New Zealand have lost six wickets for the score 148.

With New Zealand’s lead already over 120 runs, India would aim to wrap up the innings as quickly as possible. Any target over 180 runs can prove extremely challenging to chase in the last innings.
