Rishabh Pant scored 64 runs off 57 balls in India’s second innings of the Mumbai test.

A huge controversy erupted during the third day of the Mumbai test between India and New Zealand involving Rishabh Pant and third umpire Paul Reiffel.

In India’s second innings, at a very tense situation in the game, Reiffel overturned on-field umpire Richard Illingworth’s decision of ‘not out’ to ‘out’ of Rishabh Pant, sparking up a huge debate among the fans and experts, which left the Indian keeper-batter distraught and furious.

In the chase of the target of 147 runs, while other Indian batsmen stumbled, Pant kept the hopes alive with his stunning counter-attacking knock.

India were 106/6 when Pant, batting on 64 off 56, skipped forward to defend a length delivery from Ajaz Patel that kicked off a bit from the surface. The ball went past the bat, hit the pad and lobbed up for wicket-keeper Tom Blundell to grab it.

Patel went on a celebratory appeal but Illingworth gave Pant not out. Tom Latham, the Kiwi captain, took the review. Replays and Ultraedge showed that there was a spike as the ball passed the bat but the bat was in contact with the pad, while the front vision also showed a gap between the bat and the ball. Yet, third umpire Paul Reiffel apparently observed a deflection in the ball’s path off the bat and concluded that Pant had edged it.

On the field, Rishabh Pant was seen suggesting to the umpires that the spike on the Ultraedge was due to the bat brushing the pad and not the ball. However, Reiffel had made up his mind that there was a deflection in the ball’s path due to the bat and asked Illingworth to overturn his decision and send Pant on his way to the dressing room.
